Buy once, cry once - E55/Admore - UPDATED w/ pics
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:22:35 AM »
I'd very much like to thank The Forum for everything I've been able to learn about my bike and boxes over the last few months, including the several guys who answered my PM's and everyone in the below thread:

http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=1124.0

After a lot of research, I finally fell back on the old adage of "buy once, cry once," and ordered a Givi E55 setup from two different sites.  My NT (Tech) box ($328.50) and SW-MOTECH steel top rack ($69.99) are coming from TwistedThrottle, and the  Admore light kit ($135.52) and Givi mounting hardware ($20.50) from Premier Cycle Accessories.  (I'm gonna wait on the box-mounted backrest...)

Givi and Admore were the most expensive way to do it, but I don't think I'll ever be unhappy.  I looked seriously at Kappa's box (sister company to Givi?), but I was unable to figure out what light kit would work/be best.  (I had a Strobinator Jr. on my old bike--I want that type of lighting again!)  Plus, again, the E55 has a few extra cc's of room for just dollars more.

I was unable to find any Memorial Day coupon codes, but in the end, $554.51 for an Admore-lit Givi E55 (all shipping was free) is a super deal in my book.

I'll post pics once done!

Congrats on pulling the trigger on a topcase.  Having one is great for carrying the overflow from the sidecases.

I am very interested in pics as you work with the Admore light kit.
My 46 liter Givi case is deserving of such a kit that I have yet to purchase.  Show us your handiwork and share your experiences as you can.

I posted this in another thread but thought it wouldn't hurt putting it here as well.  Here is my Givi E55NT Maxia case with the Admore light lit installed.  Enjoy.

Good setup.  I've been really happy with my E52 w/ Admore kit.  If they can't figure out that you're intending to turn / switch lanes with that much light on the back, they're probably legally blind.

Video demonstration

Also, if you haven't seen them, Realtime Industries makes the reflective kits pictured in my vid for the E55 as well: http://www.realtimeindustries.com/products.php?product=Givi-E55-reflective-topcase-kit

Givi and Admore were the most expensive way to do it, but I don't think I'll ever be unhappy.

They are both quality names.  Sometimes it is just worth it.

Yeah, the E55 with the Admore kit is the only way to go. After the initial sting, you will forget about your money "well spent".

Well, everything is installed!   8)  Again, thanks this time to "maxtog" and "ALPHA556" for the inadvertent wiring help in their previous posts.  ("Search" is your friend!)

Let me see if I can't post a little knowledge, too, based on my install.

Parts used:
(1) Givi E55 NT - the "tech," or black-striped one
(1) SW-MOTECH Steel Toprack
(1) Givi Topbox mounting Kit
(1) AdMore Run/Brake/Turn LED Kit
(1) Diet Coke (since we're dropping names...)

On the MOTECH rack:  I wasn't (and still am not) sure about this rack.  It looks great, but it's not the beefiest, either.  Mainly, it was purchased because it was just over half the price of other choices.  More on the rack later...

Installed, using 4 new bolts and included spacers, to get the height back with such a thin rack (without a single sheet of instructions provided, by the way):

So far, so good--nuts and bolts are easy!

Wait, I have to drill holes in my brand new box to install the AdMore kit?!?  OK,...:

...but it was easy enough, and the LED's installed drama-free.  Pretty cool that they include a drill bit, but could they at least include one that was straight and sharp?  LOL... mine wiggled around like the shank was bent, and it wasn't even sharp enough to get through the plastic!  Ultimately, it was completed with a very sharp and very straight pilot hole from a smaller bit, then opened using the provided bit.

Now the box is ready to go outside... and that's when the seat came off.  OK, deep breath--time to dig.  After removing my tool kit and tray, I gave that huge chunk of electronics a wiggle, and it lifted off the tabs:

Laying that aside and reaching farther back, you find what you're looking for, again, as pointed out by "maxtog" and "ALPHA556:"  the 3-line brake/run/ground, and the two turn signal leads:

Using the AdMore-provided Posi-Locks--which, by the way, are probably THE CLEANEST method I've ever used to vampire-tap into existing lines--hookup was a snap.  Remember, tap the existing line and set the body of the Posi-Lock before pinching the AdMore harness in the other end!  If you do the AdMore harness side first, things get awfully twisted up  >:(

Another hole to drill?!?!?  Ok,... Align everything, plan twice, check, check again, and decide where that plug is going to leave the box.  For me, it was actually between the reinforcement ribs inside the box on the right side.  The AdMore plug was the perfect width to fit between the ribs, which I figured would be an easy way to keep it from being beat-up by cargo.  I also ran the line through the document holder on the inside, shielding it almost entirely from cargo.  From the inside, I carefully routed the harness out the right-rear side of the seat.

...aaand, the finished product:

Summary:

LIKES:  I have a HUGE topcase, and it looks great.  The lighting is commendable during the day, and superb from dusk to dawn.  I very much like the "triple blink" when you first hit the brakes, and like even more that it requires a 15-second reset to flash again (so as to not annoy traffic in stop-and-go conditions).  I like how quickly the top case removes, too, should I wish to go,... top (case) less.  Oh, and those Posi-Locks!  Those are slick.

DISLIKES:  Most notably, the fit of the box to the rack;  there was way too much space under the box.  Further, I can't tell if it's the rack or just the fit, but the tail-end of that box danced around like it was on a diving board for the first ride or two today, audibly rattling, even with my helmet on at speed.  Later, I did the "soft side of Velcro tape" on the rack to minimize the rattle, and it's significantly reduced.  Still, there's a bit too much flex at the back of the box for my tastes, and the box still installs relatively easily.  I'm going to figure out if it's the rack or not, but my suspicion is that one of the thicker aluminum racks may be the answer... or maybe some thin carpet/felt/more Velcro on the deck.  Or both.  Or, I could file down that rear triangle so it's lower, but how much to remove?  Anyway,... it's not a terminal failure.

So... that's it!  I'll be out riding   :)

The best way to solve this is supplied with the Phil's base.

Get a couple of felt pads, and attach them to the bottom of your E55.

I did that, and it is nice and firm now.

I bought a package of 48 for like $5 at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001WAK5XE/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?tag=k9com&&ie=UTF8&psc=1

Great writeup....I too have the exact same setup.  I actually went to the Premier Cycle Accessories rack as there is a good deal of adjustment front to back to make sure I had it just right for my wife.  We absolutely love it, have the felt pads on the bottom of the case and it's rock solid.  The Admore lighting kit is just the icing on the cake.  I also have an aftermarket smoked tail light which I believe to be much brighter than the stock unit.  I posted a video up near the beginning of this thread if you want to check it out.

Enjoy.   ;)

Love my steel sw motech plate. Felt thingys from home despot for a buck fiddy go on the bottom of any box I want mounted. Clean and tight.
The thickness of the plate is irrelevant as the mounting pins remain the same height above whatever plate they're mounted to.
It's the variance in the boxes, not the weight of the plate.

There needs to be either some rubber knobs or else felt pads between the box and the rack.
The brackets cannot hold it completely immobile.

If you look at all the mounting plates they all have these rubber bungs or nipples or whatever ya wanna call them

The SWMotech doesn't come with these.

Deputy
How does it work out for a passenger? Is the for and aft position about right?
I also have the same steel track and have the exact same concerns, I will probably end up with rack from Phil's sooner or later.

I put the bungs nipples felt things on my cases rather than the rack. Never see them there and leaves a clean look when no box loaded.

UDoggie, Boomer, Phil (and Tremainiac),

I actually got a handful of the rubber bumpers with the SW MOTECH hardware kit (separate from the rack), but none of them were quite the proper size to pull through the other holes in the rack and stay there;  they'll all install, sure, but shake out with no box in place.  I, too, am gonna zing over to my local hardware store with $5 and buy some of the felt furniture pads, and put them on the box.  (Like T said, I too think it'll look better when the box is removed.)  Thanks for the offers, though!

Cougar, I'm 5'7", 190, and my wife's a hotter-than-I-have-any-business-talking-to 5'11" and 70kg (since she'd kill me for putting her English weight, which is silly).  Anyway, she never needed the full depth of the seat, so I imagine she'll be just fine.  I looked at the PCA rack for the adjustability, but it looks like it provides as much 'forward' as 'aft;'  seeing as she sits up against me most of the time anyway, I think she'll likely have more issue (if any) with the footpegs than the box.    I WILL report out, however, once we're able to take a two-up ride this weekend!!!
