Road Grime or a leaky final drive?

Noticed this after I took it in for service, a few thousand miles ago, and Im not sure if this is just reg ol road grime, or if the final drive oil is leaking all over? Its on the rim as well. I plan on an oil change soon and possibly the final drive oil, even tho it prob doesn't need it. There's always gonna be some grime/oil, but cant say Ive noticed it this bad since Ive had the bike.

Any feedback would be appreciated...thanks!

Well, I can certainly understand your frustration. Although I don't quite see anything interesting in the photo... you might have to explain it.

It might be overfilled. Put it on the center stand and loosen up the filler cap. If it comes pouring out there's too much in it. It should just be below the bottom of the filler. Don't spin the wheel either.

Remember it doesn't take much oil or grease to make a real mess. On ag machines you know you have a problem when there is actually oil seen (fresh leakage is washing off the mess). My final drive looks something like yours because one mechanic used moly grease instead of moly paste on the splines... a little spun out and is now attracting dust... no big deal.

I know final drive oil has been discussed a million times, its just easier to ask tho.

Overfilled IMHO as well.......and what services did they do?

It looks like a road grime to me! Mine looks the same after longer trips!
Ride more, worry less!

Exactly, I am still waiting for someone to tell me what is abnormal in the photo...

If you look at the bottom side of the filler plug you can see an oil stain. This isn't a lot. It could be that it was sloppy workmanship. The shop poured too much in and it came out. They didn't wipe it off. Again, the OP should check the level. If it comes out then there's too much in it. If it doesn't, then I would attribute it to sloppy workmanship and worry a bit if I were to take it back to the same shop.

Like Jim said, put it up on the centerstand and open the filler up (without turning the rear wheel). It oil comes out, it was overfilled. Even if no oil comes out, clean her up really well and go for a ride. If it leaks afterwards you may have a problem...

I've learned with my '09 to do the gear oil fill with the bike only on the side stand. Every time it's been to full on the center stand, it leaks. Other-wise, dry as a bone.

It was the 7500 mile service Poke. Had it done at Comp Acc over in Springfield. This was last summer, I'm at 9000mi now.

I do recall seeing the bike up on the lift when they were working on it. I bet they filled it on the lift, & not on the side stand. I'm gonna clean it up & check the level, & not worry too much about it...now that it's finally warming up. We had 8" of snow on wed & it's in the 50's this weekend.

Check for proper level, shoot it with some S100, wait a couple of minutes, wash it down with a water hose, then RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT.

Concerned? You should be terrified! Oh wait, about that final drive? Not so much.... that looks like a bit of weeping from the drain plug and / or the filler cap. I would wipe it off with a rag with some cleaner on it and see if it continues to weep.

If you say KiPass three times and click your heals together it might make you feel better though....

OFFTOPIC: None of the following has anything to do with anyone's leaking rear end....

Hey Jim. Been busy- still busy but stopped by both forums to peek in.

Picked up a new obsess.... er, hobby: wet shaving with a straight razor. Good thing I have the aura of KiPass to protect me or the bathroom floor would be covered in blood by now (bathroom floor tiles are a straight shaver's invention: once the grout lines fill up with blood it is a sign you should stop shaving and allow time for the clotting factor to work).

Most of the usual suspects still around I see and still the usual slate of 11 questions that date back to 2009 as far as I can tell. :-)

Just broke the bike out today in fact, nice day but went to the local sea wall where the wind is pretty high and with the post- storm surf, there is salt spray all over the bike. Got to rinse it off before I put it away or it will be a pile of rust in two weeks.

Good to see you and the rest of the gang still active. I will try to stop by more often now.
