Any Suggestions on Oil?
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:30:24 PM »
Im at around 5k miles and am hearing a lot of variances on which oil to use?? I have heard 10-50 Repsol synthetic and a bunch others. I live in Texas and its primarily warm but I run the bike almost everyday including the winter, rain, etc.

I don't mean to be a jerk and nobody else here does either, well except for that ZG character  ;D

Do a quick search on oil and you will find more than enough reading and information to keep you busy for at least a week.

Any oil that you want to use.  Just change in more often than every 5000 miles.

Oil that meets Kawasaki's specifications and 5,000 miles is fine.

If this is the first oil change, it is pretty late. Should be changed under 1,000 miles the first time for break in. I have done it earlier. At 5,000 miles I'll be almost ready for change #3. After that it is more miles between changes.

Did my oil at 200, 1800, and 5000 thereafter.  The manual, (be it ever so humble) suggests different multi-weights for different temperature swings.  I use 10w40.  I've used Mobil1 synthetic, Valvoline MC oil, Kwak MC oil, and Amsoil.  I'm going back to Mobil1.  Seems to 'work' better for me and my usage.  Bike doesn't burn a drop.  I think just about anything is ok as long as you change it every so often.  I use the K&N filters as they have a nice nut welded to the top.  Makes it a bit easier to get off as the oil filter tightens itself up.  Put on the filter hand tight and you should be fine.  Murph from murphskits.com also sells an oil filter shield that goes round the filter itself (cheap protection as we've had at least one member's filter get holed from road debris.  Put on a fender extender to help protect from that sort of mishap.

I use Valvoline 10w40 motorcycle oil. I never use synthetic because of the wet clutch friction needs. You can read about Valvoline here: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline-10W40-4-Stroke-Motorcycle-Oil/16879749. I think the price was a little over $4 per quart.

Valvoline 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oils are designed specifically for motorcycles. Motorcycles place special demands on engine oil that automotive oils are not designed to handle. The wet clutch system, high RPMs and temperatures, and metals found in motorcycles require special properties for proper performance and protection. Valvoline motorcycle lubricants use premium base oils and advanced additives to bring out the best in your machine.
Valvoline 10W40 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oil:

Protects at high RPMs and temperatures
Protects wet clutch and provides maximum power transfer
Prevents deposit formation
Achieves maximum horsepower
Minimal wear
Advanced cleaning
Shear stability
Film strength
Excellent corrosion protection
Meets or exceeds manufacturer's warranty requirements
Provides exceptional protection for ATVs
For use in 4-stroke motorcycles, including cruisers and off-road motorcycles

I use Motul 300V full synthetic 10W 40.

For no other reason than it has a really cool looking green color, when viewed through the sight glass.

I changed my oil in my GSXR 1000 after the first 25 miles. Man the oil had a shiny appearance and the magnetic oil pan plug ( from the factory) had a bunch of little metal particles trapped to it.
