Valves-Sync-Plugs! How much $$$$$
« on: November 24, 2012, 07:04:45 PM »
What is fair price for a valve clearance-inspect & adjustment?  Since they'll have her all stripped down, how much more for a spark plug change and engine vacuum synchronization-inspect & adjustment?  Anything else while she's naked?

There's many other threads discussing the virtues of adjusting or not adjusting...I'm just curious about cost and my other questions.

My guess is it is up to where you live and how good of a mechanic your dealer has. A dealer in the rurals of a lower income state out in the boonies would charge less than one operating in a high cost city. You would most likely get a better answer to your question by calling a couple of dealers close to you.

I hope this doesn't surprise you too much, but I'm actually going to answer your question.  At 28,000 miles I had mine checked.  They did the valve check (none out of spec) new plugs and air filter for right at $600.

My valve check was about $300.  They didn't adjust any or do anything else.  I'm taking mine in soon for another check and a spark plug replace (56k miles).  I'm sure it's going to be more than that this time.

Think it might be better to have it done in the winter? My local dealer is swamped spring/summer and dead in the winter.
Would I be more likely to get an accurate valve check if they didn't have a a bunch of service orders stacked up, or do you think it doesn't matter?

I had local dealer do valves and give me clearance map and new plugs at 30,000 miles. $360 but no shims needed so didn't need to remove cams.

Talk to the owner of the dealership, or the guy that runs the shop.  I'm sure they would prefer you bring it in when they are slowest.  They may even work with you on price if you ask them nicely.  Most shops have some type of winter toy maintenance going on, but nothing like spring, summer, and fall.  I would expect you'll get a better job if they are not in a rush.

Doing the valves on the C14 requires a lot of space for all the parts that have to come off.  That's another reason to have it done when they are slow, less chance of things getting kicked around.

I'm curious about the folks who are saying you paid $300 or so.  My labor was $382 - which actually seems very reasonable.  I had $200 in parts (gaskets, plugs, O-rings and air filter.  Are ya'll just counting labor?

Jim, anyone who has pulled all the stuff of the bike it takes to get the valve covers off knows that is a heck of a price.  Your dealer is taking good care of you!

I was surprised as well. I do trust that they did the work they said they did as I have had them do work for me over the years with great results. They replaced the cylinder base gasket on my DR650 for $480. That was 5 years ago and that bike hasn't leaked a drop of oil since.

I took my 2011 to the selling dealer for the full service as it had 16,000 miles.
They did the valve check, installed new plugs, new air filter and fuel injection sync. They did not do the oil or filter as I had just done this myself with Amsoil.
I'm sure they did the above service as the mchanic found a lost fob key which had, unknown to me, fallen down inside the left side fairing.
The bike ran smoother when the work was done.
 The total cost was $609.27.
That is a lot of money, I know but it was worth it to me to keep the warranty in force and to ensure the bike running at it's best.

If that helps you sleep at night, than that is money well spent. I however won't spend that kind of money, and I will sleep great.
