Never heard of the Milton Hershey School so I looked it up. Interesting. Has it had a profound impact on those orphans it was designed to help?
Most of the kids today are not orphaned, but must come from an impoverished background. The impact really depends on the student and their sponsor (Sponsor is the person who brought them to the school and is responsible for their care/decisions). There are some incredible success stories of kids who completely reversed the cycle of poverty and went on to do incredible things. Then others either don't make it through or go right back to poverty and their kids end up at the school! The school gives the kids the opportunity, it's what they do with it that makes the difference. Houseparenting there is a good job and they desperately need folks. If you like working with your spouse and the idea of making a difference in a child's life.......then you should look into it. The pay is good and your housing, utilities and food are included. It just wasn't a good fit for my wife and I. Things changed for us when our daughter came home from college (with baby lol) and the school changed some rules on church attendance (a lack of) that we did not feel comfortable with.
