Is this normal?
« on: September 08, 2012, 06:29:37 PM »
I have a 2012 and notice that I get a very lite oil film build up on the tetra lever around the drive shaft. I can't find any oil leaks anywhere so I don't know what the hell. Is this normal and if so what is causing it. I have 1100 miles on the bike and and it's been doing this since day one.

Ok, after closer inspection it seems to be coming from the bottom of the drive shaft boot closest to the engine. Almost like the factory clamp is not tight enough.

Lots of reading to be found.

Ok, can you tell me what magical words I need to put into that search engine to find what I need? I tried about 10 different word combinations and did the same on google. I still can't find anything substantial as to what the problem is. A link to the thread would help me more than a link to the search engine.

Don't bother, it's normal.  There's some residual whatever in the boot from the manufacturing process.  I had it on mine.  Wipe it off and keep on keeping on.

I want FULL CREDIT for not responding to this one! That is like waving a red flag in front of a bull Chet....

OFFTOPIC: Went to Rice- O- Rama today (New England thing like a flea market for older Japanese bikes) and on the way in heard someone say 'Hey, that guy has road kill strapped to his bike!'. Seeing as he was pointing at my bike I can only assume he was talking about Andrea or Mr. Elkhoof and while Andrea does look a little 'clunky' in her riding gear (as we all do) I have to believe he meant Mr. Elkhoof. Road kill-  what a foolish man.  ;D

I still can't find anything about it. I find a lot about over filling and the seal leaking at the wheel, but nothing about the boot closest to the engine. I hope it is just residual oil on the U-joint that is just coming out of the boot. I will keep my eye on it, just trying to avoid going to to the dealer and leaving it there for a month for something stupid.

There should not be any lube on the outside of any part of the driveline as far as I know. Can you snap a photo of what you are looking at and post it- I promise you will get opinions on that, some of them might even be good opinions. :-)

Brian, this sounds like what we had early on with 08/09 bikes.  There would be a little weepage, actually more like a smudge and that was it.  Multiple members had it.  Nothing to worry about.  If it's more than that then it's something else.  We had a picture of it but alas, it went poof.

Also IIRC if the OP just had a tire changed, and the tech really greased the hell out of the mating splines between the wheel and the rear hub it could result in a "Leak" like he/she is describing...  IIRC...

Look at part #49006 which is the boot. The oil is coming from the bottom of that boot. Click on the top left of image and it will make it much larger so you can see it.

OK no offense but I have to ask. If part# 92171 is the clamp have you tightened it.    ....as I'm sitting in the barcolounger too lazy to walk down to the garage.

No, but how do you tighten it? I looked at it and didn't see a way. They look like a one time deal. Maybe I can put a worm drive band clamp on it.

You said the bike was a 2012.  Sounds like it is a Warranty Issue.

Xevic, it looks like the front boot, behind the frame side bracket is just a dust cover and holds no oil. The band clamp holds the boot on but is not a sealing clamp. As Mad Marc said it could be from over lubing the splines. It could also from a different source unknown. I looked at mine but since it hasn't had a bath this year all I could tell was that it's dirty.

Better safe than sorry X, you should pull the entire rear end apart to make sure all is well... Oh, and while it's all apart have it powder coated black!  ;) 8)

It is not adjustable; it is either clamped or unclamped, and if upclamped it is pretty obvious so I would suspect his is clamped (or closed).
