I use Valvoline 10w40 motorcycle oil. I never use synthetic because of the wet clutch friction needs. You can read about Valvoline here: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvoline-10W40-4-Stroke-Motorcycle-Oil/16879749. I think the price was a little over $4 per quart.

Valvoline 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oils are designed specifically for motorcycles. Motorcycles place special demands on engine oil that automotive oils are not designed to handle. The wet clutch system, high RPMs and temperatures, and metals found in motorcycles require special properties for proper performance and protection. Valvoline motorcycle lubricants use premium base oils and advanced additives to bring out the best in your machine.
Valvoline 10W40 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oil:

Protects at high RPMs and temperatures
Protects wet clutch and provides maximum power transfer
Prevents deposit formation
Achieves maximum horsepower
Minimal wear
Advanced cleaning
Shear stability
Film strength
Excellent corrosion protection
Meets or exceeds manufacturer's warranty requirements
Provides exceptional protection for ATVs
For use in 4-stroke motorcycles, including cruisers and off-road motorcycles

Ummmmm.....do you realize that synthetic motorcycle oil does meet or exceed any requirements for a wet clutch system? Synthetic is superior in every single way when compared to dino oils, and how many folks do you know or have even heard of, that has had their clutch slipping from pretty much whatever oil they dump in? Tons of us don't even use motorcycle oils, and our bikes are doing beyond fabulous. Valvoline is fine oil, pretty much all are for the most part....well maybe not Amsoil.  ;D

Gumby,
You can be a jerk I have tuff skin! Thanks for all the info everyone.. I did have the break in service done already.. I am looking at changing the oil every 4k, the manual says 6, but my connie is primarily used for law enforcement so I need a good oil that can handle 0-110 in a mile then a complete stop especially on funeral escorts.. No one runs these harder than cops! My dept is going to connies from the beamer but are just in the transition phase so our mechanics are still being trained up..

Gumby,
You can be a jerk I have tuff skin!
So you are asking about oil for a bike that you don't even do the service work on?

IMHO 4K is to long, and I pretty sure that 6K is not what the manual says. It doesn't matter what oil you use change it often.

If you have a police bike how do you only use it primarily for law enforcement? That gets my goat because now you are talking about tax dollars.   >:(

Why do you do 110 during a funeral escort?

Sigh.... so many questions on this one.

No one runs these harder than cops!
Doubt that  ;D

So glad you are off the BMWs. The Kawasakis should be a lot cheaper to work on. I am not sure if they warranty commercial use bikes the same as they would the typical consumer. The unlimited mileage 3 year warrant is awesome.

Really.....why is that?

Shucks Pokey, it's probably because I am an old fart.  I am too frugal to buy synthetics, but I do use oil that meets Kwak specs.  I put less than 10,000 miles a year on my bike and do alot of high speed runs.  I can afford to change my oil more than twice a year, so I do.  I guess it makes me feel good.

I guess my question to you is after probably being raised to change oil every 3000 miles, why do you go 5K, or longer?

My manual says 7500, page 153....  Did they change it for the newer models?  They must be harder on the oil than the Classic models 08/09.....  Can someone with a 10, 11, and 12 confirm for their models?  Thanks.

Also, 'synthetic' oils typically hold up better in 'bad' conditions such as police work.  I would definitely use a synthetic in that case.  That's what it's designed for.

Jim, you are correct my 2011 manual calls for an oil change every 7,500 miles or once a year(page 186). WTF? I was always taught to change oil at least every 3,000 in cars and motorcycles, if not more.

It also says to inspect tire wear every 7,500 miles (page 181). Can't remember a time a tire lasted 6,000 miles.

I apologize denver, I stand corrected. I am still curious about the secondary use of a police motorcycle.

Secondary use would most likely be to and from work and home. Many states use detail police. And transport. Most Troopers in Maine use their cruisers to get back and fourth.

I've always changed mine around 5k or so.  I don't believe in anything less than that as it's a waste of oil IMHO....but whatever makes you comfortable is fine as well.

I find it amazing that (and this happened to me) at a dealership after buying a car and sitting in a meeting for new owners that the service people were hawking 3k oil changes.  However, if a dealership sells you a car with unlimited oil changes it's at least 5k before they'll do it.  What gives here?  Oils and engines have improved for the most part so why 3k changes still?  I think I had a 3k change interval for my 63 Ford Fairlane and by golly it needed it by that mileage.  Now, not so much.

Isn't that a given? You need to go back and forth to work, but as one does he/she is still an officer of the law and the bike is still used for law enforcement.

I read that as my primary use for the bike is to be a police officer, and on my days off I get to take it on road trips. My bad (maybe) .

Still no matter what oil he uses, if it blows up the tax payers get to buy him a new one right?

I'm in the wrong line of work. I rarely get to go 0-110 and back to a complete stop and it has never been during a funeral escort.  ;)

More power to ya if you can do it legally I guess.

Rant complete.

This is my personal bike that I also use for funeral escorts and going to and from work... Everything is on my dime and a tax write off! As far as the 110, thats the fastest I will go, dont like it but when you have a line of 50+ cars going 55mph and you are blocking an on-ramp how fast do you think you need to go to get to the front and block the next exit a mile down the road?? Some of the older guys make it up to 140 like nothing on the connie.. Although unless you take it on an approved track I do not recommend going that fast, ever! Our riding is a little different than civ's. I havent checked the manuel for certain on the miliage but the dealer said 6, our city mechanics say they recommend 4.. but I can see if you ask 10 ppl you will get 10 different answers...

Funeral escorts sound unnecessarily dangerous. Speeds of 110-140 on a public roadway are a felonious hazard and should be treated as such; the offenders should be jailed. That is, unless the police are truly above the law.

Thats why we close down the roads while we are doing them.. Each state is different but its not a felony to speed, just a class c misdemeanor :) Thanks for the input on the oil!

I only use pao/ester oil, non of that over priced group III crap masquerading as "synthetic oil".
My contribution to the millionth oil thread is this:
Find an oil wholeseller that sells to the public and buy a case of good oil, keep it in your garage.
I get Redline 5-30 car oil for around $7.80 a qt, Redline 10-40 motorcycle oil for around $8.13 a qt.
I don't know how much M1 bike oil is going for, but I saw Royal Purple bike oil selling yesterday for $13 a qt and that is way too much F-ing $.

Rotella T6 Synth blend.

I expect 200,000 miles on that oil.  I would say more, but at 200K I plan to part mine out on ebay
