Skene Photon Blasters...anyone with pics?
« on: October 29, 2013, 07:53:01 PM »
Thinking about getting the Skene Photon Blasters for front visibility in traffic etc. Anyone installed these, and have pics of how you mounted them? Looks like the fender bolts are the main spot, but looking for pics and ideas for other places.

Thanks

My preference is the Hyper-Whites.  Fit nicely inside the mirror next to the pivot assembly.  Modulate or constant on.  You will be seen.

I like the Skene one's due to the modulation/flicker when not looking directly at them, yet no flicker when directly looking...really catches the attention of the idiot's on the road. Also the alert function is pretty cool.

Want them down lower so to produce the triangle of light.

I recognize that K1200RS. I have never had those flashing lights on any of my bikes though, they drive me crazy.

Mounted mine high and wide because they will be turn signals and I felt the 'Alert' feature would work better if they were higher. In the close-up the mirror is folded back. The alert flash helps when splitting lanes if anyone is actually looking. I did a custon install on the rear lights with a disconnect plug to allow for bag removal. Lately I have been commuting without the bags and just ordered a second set of rears which will get a custom install. Below is the install procedure.

The install was as follows to the best of my recollection. Made some cardboard cut-outs the size of the Skene lights and experimented with placement by sticking them on the mirror bases. The mirrors were removed from the bases, three bolts on the underside each, I think. The base itself is hollow and open to the inside of the bike. Measured and marked for the two small holes that would be necessary per side. Some masking tape over the area to be drilled allows for marking with a pen and seeing better the marks then working on the black surface of the base. One hole is for the small mounting stud the other is for the wire to the light. Used a thin strip of quality mounting tape on the under side if the light. Fed the wire in and through to the interior, and stuck the light in place. The mounting tape held the light in place and both hands were free. The PITA part was not the hook-up of the wiring but screwing the bolt with washer onto the stud within the tight space inside the mirror base. Don't recall exactly how I did it but have to assume it involved cussing, beer and holding my tongue just right (good luck). I may have actually lightly (lightly is very important here) super glued the nut to the tip of my index finger, installed the washer and spun the whole little assembly to get the nut started. If I did this then of course the wire would have been installed second. Probably used a little low strength Locktite and tightened the nut just a little, after all the lights only weigh a few grams. The hook-up of the wiring is well explained in the manufacture's instructions so I will not cover that.

Hope this helps.
If it can't be fixed with a hammer you can sure as hell teach it a lesson.

thanks.  So do you feel they work? and bright enough in the yellow?

I was thinking of going with the white version and mounting down low. I have HID's in the headlights, and not sure if the yellow or white lights would get washed out because of the bright HID's.

Now I think I want yellow mounted like you have, and also a set of white's down low....

Nothing around the headlights should be washed out, ever, or your headlight aim is too high (or you are blinding all traffic with high beams)!  I turned my turn signals into full-time running lights (they blink OFF for turn signal function) and they can be seen quite clearly from all angles... and I have HID headlights.  I replaced the city lights with yellow- those are not washed out either... although from far away, they do kinda merge into the headlight "aura".

Don't think they are washed out based on the reaction from drivers when the alert function is used.

Can't remember how many lights can be hooked up to a single controller but it is several, so go crazy.

I have the skene lights on the back of all my bikes.  They have a strobe kinda effect that keeps vehicles from following too closely and they are many times brighter than the stock lights on the bikes.

I have the photon blasters on the front of the Concours with the optional flash feature where you pulse the front brake lever and the photon blasters flash a pattern to alert a driver ahead of you or approaching from a side street that you are there.
They also function as extra turn signals.

With my Mondo LED lights they definitely present an image that attentive drivers can't miss.

Fender or reflector.  Can't recall right now.  I'm thinking whichever one is more forward on the bike.  Bought the attachment hardware with the lights.
