Driving Light Hookup
« on: May 05, 2013, 08:03:21 PM »
So I am putting some LED Driving lights on my 2010 C14. Today I connected them up, and have been trying to figure out where to get the power to run these lights. I had a brainwave (dangerous I know). I thought I would connect them to the Grip Warmer cct, as I hardly ever use them. I connected to the Warmer Switch side of the Grip Warmer Relay, to get switched power. I connected everything and tried it out. Perfect, well for a few mins (3-4). Then the lights went out. No Blown fuse. So  I tried again. It works, but only for a few mins. First question. Why is the ECU killing power to the grip warmer after a few mins. Second. Is there a convenient place to get power, It is less than 5 Amps I need for these LED Lights (I was thinking about the City Light cct, but not sure if there is enough spare amps there). I don`t want to use up the Aux power as I am already running GPS and Audio on that. I did`n`t want to pull the tank to run a new cct, but I may have to.

Thanks for any suggetions

if i'm not mistaken, there's a circuit to cut power on and off to the grip warmers if your bike isn't moving.
it's to prevent the battery from going flat.
i didn't need to pull the tank or side panel when i installed a new relay + fuze + wiring for a new horn. so i guess you can install a new set of wiring for your lights without too much trouble.

Why not just run a wire directly from the battery for your lights using a relay and fuse. Then tap into the acc. wire to switch the relay.

If you want switched power I used the front accessory leads under the top left black fairing.

Thanks guys for your responses. I will see if power is restored when I start moving the bike. Plan B will be to run a separate power wire with fuse and relay for the lights. I would be interested to know how you routed the wiring without moving the tank.

If you go to the accessory lead on the front left side of the bike you don't have to deal with the tank.   8)

Thanks. But, as I stated, I a am already using thet cct for my GPS / Audio System. That cct unfortunately is limited to 5 Amps.

take off the right inner cover (black plastic panel), and its a big empty space there all the way down to the battery area.
take off the battery cover (plastic panel), and you can just push a wire down that space to get to the battery's positive terminal.

with all the covers back in place, no wires are visible.

great time to hookup a fuzeblock.

and it will eliminate 99% of current draw from your accessory plug (plug will only be used to determined "switched" power)

It would be a good time. Fuzeblock website says they are out of stock. Have been for a while. Any links as to where to find a Fuzeblock? I have been trying to run one down for a bout 6 weeks.

You don't actually need to remove the side panel to run the wires. There is a good video on:   Www.advancedsporttouring.com.  Fishing the wire up the right side from the battery box is the ticket.
