In an hour or so I am going to pick up my new carbon fiber rear hugger made by ProjektD.
Only ordered this a week ago from Taiwan so it shipped PDQ ;D ;D
Anyone interested in some pictures before and after install?
Jon.
-
That'd be keen! I love the look of those, been thinking about it.
-

But of course...
-
You gotta remove the exhaust to install it, highly recommend some thread-lock on the bolts. Be sure to install while on the centerstand, be very aware that you have adequate clearance for all around the tire.
-
Appreciate the advice.
Do you know if you need to "tweak" anything to ensure wheel clearance?
Jon.
Brackets are pretty beefy, and I think you have a bit of adjustment play for the mounting holes. I bedlined my brackets, I will never worry about them rusting. I honestly can't remember if I needed to do much adjusting, but it for sure does "hug" around that rear tire. ;)
-
Just opened the box to check the contents and have some pictures for you all ;D ;D
The carbon fiber hugger was well packed and I also got the red filler plugs.
There was a plastic bag containing brackets, bolts etc that are needed for the install.
Next week I may be able to get the hugger fitted but at the moment I am unable to move much due to my chest having 5 big holes and 1 tiny one after surgery.
Jon.
I hope that you heal up fully and quickly.
-
Holy cow, 65 bucks for shipping?
-
I hope you will get well.
-
This hugger is actually made by Skidmarx in the UK and is available in the US from Streetfighters by Design. There is no real need to buy it from Taiwan.

These guys? http://www.streetfightersbydesign.com/ (http://www.streetfightersbydesign.com/)
Terrible website.... is it the same as the ZX14 would be, as they don't have ZG/GTR listed?

Yep, that's the correct place. Their website is one of the worst I've ever seen. If you're serious about wanting the hugger give David a call (or e-mail), he's pretty good to deal with. We had a group buy on those huggers a couple of years ago and David imported them for us.

Well let's have another group buy!
Just how close is the tire?
I was going to go to a 190 55 or 200 55
-
Yeah, I emailed him asking. Thanks, Conrad! :)

$280 shipped from Streetfighterbydesign.com. David is a very nice fellow.

I got one about a week ago, but I got the black one since my '09 is black. I was originally looking at the Skidmarx site (not a great website) before finding Streetfighters and was happy because I just couldn't stomach the $70 for shipping. SF shipped it the same day and shipping was only about $10. I had a little issue with clearance on the right side; it was about as close to the tire as it could possibly be without rubbing so I didn't trust it. I bent the right side bracket just slightly and it was perfect after that. Like the instructions say, you will want to use some thread locker on the swingarm bolts when you put the nuts back on because once the hugger is on, the threaded portion of the bolt is literally just a hair to short to reach the lock on the lock nut.
-
Looking good Jon! 8)
-
+1 on the thread locker.
Someone mention my name?
-
So it sounds like a bigger tire like a 200 55 would NOT fit with this fender? or could one make changes to the brackets to mount a biger tire?
Thanks jj

This was an issue that some of us who participated in the group buy a couple of years ago had. We ended up ordering slightly longer bolts for those locations.

Do you recall the exact bolt and size you acquired to replace? I wouldn't mind getting them in advance so I can do the project as soon as my hugger is in.

Yep, I ordered em from Ron Ayers and here's the part numbers and size.
BOLT,SOCKET,10X67 Kaw # 92153-1944 Ayers part number 1100677
I bought some extra nuts at the time as well. (cuz I boogered up the originals)
NUT Kaw # 92210-1139 Ayers part number 1107363

How man of each are required? 2? And I'm confused... I looked the part on Ronayres.com and they look like OEM parts from Concours... if the OEM part is too short, what am I missing? Or is it that one side is too short?
92153A 92153-1943 BOLT,SOCKET,10X63
92153B 92153-1944 BOLT,SOCKET,10X67
I see the part you reference is the 92153B which appears to be 4 mm longer than the other side... so the 67 is good for both sides and I'd just need one?
-
Someone mention my name?
I see what you did there ???
-
Are you comfortable with the softer stainless bolts in what may be a critical location?

I have some pics on my work PC, I'll show you what I'm talking about later today. If I remember.

Any hardness markings on the head?

Taff, stainless has it's place. I tend to err on the side of caution, especially when being wrong might mean being dead. I'm not an engineer or metallurgist so I don't know when 'good enough' might not be good enough. Others might disagree but to each his own. 8)

Conrad, any help for me and other folks deciding to do this mod would be helpful.
More opinions and knowledge, better outcome as far as I am concerned.
Jon.
Here's the pics of my install using the stock bolts.

As you can see using the stock bolts the nuts just barely get the last bit of threads on the bolts and it would probably be fine for anyone less anal than I am. If you use the part numbers that I posted earlier the 67mm bolts are just a tad longer and the nuts get all of the threads. Using a longer bolt than 67mm will work of course but there's no need.

We mount 400lb+ + outboard motors on jack plates sometimes 12 in. back , making 370hp with four SS 1/2 bolts and I never heard of one snapping.
-
UPS has my rear hugger..... should be on my doorstep when I get home!

On a side note - We need to talk!! I blew up my outboard and am in need of another.. Now of any decent deals on a Merc 225 EFI or DFI? or I would take a 200 powerhead only if price is right...
Send me a PM... thx
Back on topic I was seriously considering a Carbon Fiber hugger to match my Muzzy Dual Carbon Exhaust but just can't bring myself to spend more money at this time... Spent to much over past couple months not to mention my other love aka boat needs some attention :)

LEFT TURN CLYDE! lol

So there's a step that was missed in the other guy's instructions, Taff was lucky enough to not have to remove his exhaust. You'll see in my write out of this step how you can avoid it.
Install the stock exhaust. Spend 15 minutes trying to figure out why the heck the mid pipe bolt won't go all the way through the hole. Go inside and check the diagram on the shop manual. Realizes that the back bracket goes INSIDE, not OUTSIDE. Reinstall and the mid pipe bolt goes right through.
So...it only took me an hour or so (plus the extra enjoyment from the above step) to get 'er installed this a.m. before work. Wanted to get it installed before bike night with my drinking buddies.
