Title: my traction control must be broke
Post by: stevewfl on December 17, 2011, 01:15:17 PM
because for the 1st time in 47,000 miles and two years my bike was wheelying all over during the sportbike ride today. The third time it caught me so off guard i SLAMMED the front down.

i gotta get it in some loose sand or wet grass and put it through the traction test, warranty man may be getting my bike finally after all this time.

i thought maybe I had it disabled but pushed the button and then the yellow disabled warning light came on so I think it was right initially.

What would traction controll have over a wheelie? I don't have traction control on my 09 and so far have not had a wheelie problem.  ;)

Back in 1974 I had a Z-1A which got weird at 7400 miles. There was a few times I had to hit the rear brake to get it back down. The front end of my little triple was always in the air.....even when I was not trying to.

I would think it would throw a code if it was malfunctioning...

But I don't know much about it. My bike doesn't have TC on it, or ABS with linked brakes, and I'm glad.

If I want to do a burnout or carry the front wheel down the street, I want that choice available. :)

Traction control compares the front and rear wheel speed and the computer doesn't allow them to be a different speed, SUPPOSED to prevent wheelies and burnouts which to date it always has.

Uhhhm traction control can be disabled.

Aside that its proven trillions times over street and trac the same rider brakes faster with ABS.

If I was closeminded to the latest available performance technologies I'd be rockin' a hardley-ableson with a "springer" suspension and if the air force had that 'tude they would have a fleet of bi-planes  (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/bigthumb.gif)

Yeah and it would be a kinder world. Bi Planes on a aircraft carrier would be sorta cool.  Traction contol on a Cown Vic about got me stuck one time. Turned it off and away we went. No wheelie though.

Me thinks, I've been wrong before, stevewfl means the vehicle stops faster with ABS. No argument from me. I don't think he means the driver gets on the brakes faster. No backwards wheelie with ABS either.... ::)

Nicky Hayden loves drifting through turns, and I like it sometimes as well. 8)

I'm not 1/10th as fast as Nicky, but still love sliding my bike. I like ABS in cages, but not traction control or anti-sway. My new truck has that crap, and it limits what I want to do. ::)

I don't need a computer to save me. I can control my ride. ;D

How far is it coming up?  You can get the front end up a few inches with traction control on.

Always check the easy stuff first.  It may be nothing more than a dead fuse or loose connector.

Wouldn't something like that trigger a fault code?  It would be a pretty questionable design if safety systems such as ABS and TC could just go offline silently...

Steve,
You have most likely broken your TC by installing that 190X55 rear tire.  The slightly larger rolling diameter has caused the TC to allow just a bit more speed difference between your front and rear wheels.   :rotflmao:

I too run a 190X55 and my TC is working great on gravel surfaces and wet pavement in a straight line.

I wonder if this is a fact in every gear—particularly third gear?  ?  Not trying to discredit anyone but; IMO, It would be nice if there were a Big K rep on the forum that could answer this for certain.

I wonder how that is supposed to work: in the S1000RR traction control and wheelie control are two different features. Me wonders how. Where's Brian?

They are one and the same on the C14. It is a very simple system. It compares the speed on the front wheel and speed on the rear wheel and that is it. No fancy wheelie control or anything like that. Maybe it got confused. Or the change in tire size makes a bigger difference than one thinks.

The larger rear wheel turns slower than the front wheel and allows you to wheelie longer before the front wheel slows down enough for the system to detect it.  That's my theory anyways.

it would be easy to find out if tc is working or not. just go try to spin it up on gravel or grass.
I think the whole point of this thread is just that wfl wanted us to know he did a wheelie.

I haven't played with turning the TC off, but my bike will power wheelie, at least for very short hops.

In the spirit of trouble shooting I have a coupla questions.
1.  Did you use a full synthetic oil last oil change?  (Synthetic adds about 50 horse power and some 46 ft pounds of torque)
2.  Did you place your fob in your left or right pocket?  (Right pocket is for touring, left is for squiding)
3.  Did you flip on your 12 volt hair dryer/red neck turbo?
 ;D ;D

yes the front wheel will come up a tiny bit(it has to for the traction control, to detect it) BUT IT WILL IMMEDIATLY SHUT DOWN YOUR ENGINE, YOU WILL FEELI IT.  IF IT DOESNT DO THAT ITS BROKEN.

SORRY FOR CAPS  WAS ACCIDENT.

and there are people that will pay for this  ?

and there are people that will pay for this  ?

1) It is not optional on the US 2011/2012, it is standard equipment, just like ABS.  So you do not "pay for it" (by opting for it) except as part of the price of the bike.

2) It is not designed specifically to stop wheelies, that is just a side-effect.  It is primarily a safety system to keep control, stability, and power in adverse conditions, such as rain, sand, slippery pavement, mud, etc.  For that purpose, people report it works very well.

3) You can disable it whenever you like, from the handlebar controls.  Although, it will default back to "on" again when the bike is restarted.

Me too...
With TC on if I do a power wheelie it comes up a bit but the engine cuts power and it SLAMS back down.

@cablebandit     High as in stoned or high as in the front wheel is high?   No the front wheel is not high , it might make it an inch or 2 at most before throttle is retarded..     When i want to wheelie or ride aggressively  i turn it off..

Yuk it up, Girls. I'll take a pic and post it in a heartbeat! :)

I have two three Nicky Hayden sigs. One on my Dainese Tattoo jacket, and one on Nicky's faceshield right after winning the AMA Superbike Championship.

Tommy signed my jacket on the opposite shoulder the same day. That was the day Nicky told me He was gonna be Rossi's teammate.

I also have a signed Nicky poster from His AMA winning season.

I've met so many of my motorcycle heros, and feel so lucky to have had the chance.
