I have a 2009 Concours and just purchased the 1" Pull Back adapters. Has anyone deleted the storage compartment and replaced it with the one from a 2010 or newer ?

I reckon anything can be done, but keep in mind the body the '10 door sits in is different, and it needs KiPass stove knob to actuate the '10 lock/unlock

Yes, you can remove the 08/9 glovebox and replace it with the solid panel from the 10+. You will need to change the bracket under the box for the new panel to bolt to.
-
Thanks , that's what I was hoping. The lid on mine was bugger by the previous owner, that and I really want to add the 1" pull back adapters that interfere with storage compartment.
So off to the local Kawasaki dealer.
-
ohhh i thought the idea was to properly replace the box with a '10 govebox on the left fairing...my bad. apologies :)
-
No. when you buy the Pull back kit they do warn you that it can't be used on the 08-09 models because it hits the storage compartment ( or very tiny glove storage compartment). But I bought them anyway hoping it could work.
-
There is a 2010 piece on ebay right now for cheap money !!!
-
I was looking on Ebay and didn't see one. Dang it. just ordered one from Pro-Am motors sports here in Calgary. $91.00 cdn. The trim piece is the same.
Part # if anyone is interested is 14092-0112

Delete the glove compartment, eh? Don't think I've ever heard it phrased quite like that. Remove it, yes. Delete, not so much. ;) It's funny about that glove compartment (which really isn't large enough to store a set of good gloves) that it does come in handy for some things. Even had requests to add it back in on the 2nd gen bikes.
-
Yep, I find that little useless box to the one of the most useful things on the bike. Also one of the main deterrents to trading forward to a Gen. 2; the glove box on those really IS useless, at least to me.
Different people, different levels of usefulness....

Ear plugs, disc lock, garage door opener, receipts, small tools...

They are both pretty useless, IMHO. But I also don't think either (gen 1 or gen 2) is larger or has a better space layout than the other. But the gen 2 version can be accessed with a tank bag fitted (unlike the gen 1) and is locking (unlike the gen 2). So I am not sure why you find the gen 1 version is more useful.
-
I put a magnetic tankbag over mine at times for those long trips of 150 miles or less..
-
Several reasons: 1) it is right in front of me so I can look down into it, even on the road. 2) it is shallow so the stuff I put in there is readily available and never under anything else. 3) it is big enough to hold everything that I want to put in a glovebox. 4) it is not in the way of anything and because I do not use a tankbag, nothing is ever in the way of it.
I use that thing at least three times every single time I ride; the first time to reach in and press the garage door button to close the garage. The second time to reach in and press the button to arm the house alarm system (which cannot be done until the garage door is closed). The third time for certain is to de-activate the house alarm and open the garage door on the return. In addition to that, I sometimes reach into the glove box to adjust my Starcom audio system, which I can do using the remote control.... because I have a glove box that makes it easy to access. I also use it to hold my EZ- Pass transponder where it is out of the weather, out of sight (the bike has an alarm so anyone opening the glove box will make a lot of light and noise) and works every single time I have gone through an EZ Pass checkpoint. I put earplugs in there, both new and used (OK, now for that collective "Ewwwwwwwww"). I keep a light in there where I can easily grab it anytime, including when riding. I also keep my travel / fuel logs in there along with several pens so I can quickly and easily jot down my stops for the IBA during sanctioned rides.
I can reach into the glove box while rolling (feet up) and open the garage door. I could not do that with a Gen. 2 glove box, plus because they are deeper, some stuff would end up under other stuff and that would not work for me.
In short, I absolutely love that cheap piece of garbage on the Gen. 1 C-14's, use it all the time and have no use for a Gen. 2 glove box.
But I also put two LED's in the glovebox which illuminate it at night and that makes it about a million times more useful for me- I could not find virtually anything in there at night (which is 1/2 of the time I ride on long rides) without it being illuminated. So mine might be substantially more useful than it was stock; I know it is for me being illuminated.

Well, if you do have to upgrade to a newer model, at least it is theoretically possible to put a gen 1 tank glove box on a gen 2

Ahem, you mean 'update', not 'upgrade', right? 'Cause the Gen. 2 models need a lot more tweakin' than just the glove box to snuggle in-between my legs. ;D
I would not bother with putting the early glove box on a later bike, I would instead conjure up a small tank bag that mounted on an arm that could be pivoted up and away from the fuel tank. But then this all comes down to personal preferences as well as how we use our bikes; I can be in and out (Easy Boys!) of a gas station in well under 2 minutes and back to highway speeds, and that is meaningful to me. That very same thing is probably not of any use or interest whatsoever to most people who ride a C-14.
Besides all of that, my '08 is just getting broken in at 100K miles. No need to think about anything else for a while. Sure it needs a little body work on the right side, and a little body work on the left side, and a coat of paint more or less all over but hey, you know what they say..... 'Bondo in your doors shows courage in your heart.'.

You guys make some very good points. And yes I will likely miss it ... But I have a smaller Magnetic Tank bag that holds all my all my nik-naks.The previous owner had broken the latch and even with a clever repair it still was never as good as new. Plus the main reason was the handle bars back 1" and up anther 1/2". That gives me more upright riding position.
-
It's a mini George Foreman. You won't miss it unless you have to have your sandwich warm.
-
I bought the earlier glove box set up off ebay cheap & will be installing it on my 2012 this weekend, 2 glove boxes are better than one :chugbeer:

There has been some success with insulating the underside of the box.

Once I disabled the electronic lock with a hidden latch, I found the glove box on my 2010 to be very useful for anything that doesn't mind being toasted.

That's funny because on my 2012 the inside of the glove box barley gets warm.

up Date.
So the modification is complete. and I should add that the trim for the gas tank cover from the 08-09 will not fit without some modification. Although minor it cannot be reused on the 08-09 storage compartment after the modification.( A small section needs to be cut out of the middle ) Also a small bracket needs to be made for the 2 mounting screws. Took me 15 min to make out of some scrap aluminum.
I can post pictures if anyone is interested. The modification looks like a stock 2010 .

Of course we are interested in pictures!

Sorry, The bike is dirty it has been tucked away in the corner with a cover over it . my camera picks up every spec of dust.
I haven't post pictures here before so this might not happen right away.

Isn't it amazing how a bike doesn't look very dirty, until you take a picture of it and all the dirt seems to be highlighted.

I call it "wishful seeing". It is in the same family as selective hearing.

I didn't think the Gen 1 bikes had the heated grips. Did you install those from a Gen 2 bike?

He must have- even has the correct/stock heating controller, mounted in a little custom box.

I purchased the Connie with them installed. The controller was mounted farther forward( you can see the wholes I plugged ) but you had to feel around for it if you wanted to adjust the temp. So I moved them closer to the Gen 2 location. Last season was my first with the C14. I had a low KM 2006 C10 briefly in 2013 and liked it , but also owned a 2006 Triumph Tiger. I was going on a 10 day trip with five close friends and couldn't decide which bike to take, put them both up for sale with the intent of riding the one that didn't sell on the trip. Yup they both sold the same weekend and I was bikeless. So in desperation went on a frantic bike shopping weekend . I visited the local shops and had the most frustration NON-Purchase experience of my life. Eventually found a bike and purchased it because it was a smoking deal not because I liked it. Wait for it..... 2009 Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe. Rode that for the rest of the season sold it , made money and found my 2009 C14 with 18000Km . LOVE IT!!! :)

I'm confused, please help. There are 2 versions of a "glove" compartment for the C-14? I have a new-to-me '12 with no compartment and I miss the storage of the C-10. I carried enough stuff on the C-10 to make use of ANY additional storage on the C-14. If someone is eliminating the compartment and is looking for the blank plate from my '12, contact me!
-
The first gen center 'glove box' is not worth the trouble for you to relocate the relays and replace the bracket to make it fit. You'd be better off running a tank bag.

Yes. Gen 1 had a tiny flat one on the tank. Gen 2 (like yours) has a tiny rectangular one on the side. Neither holds much.

Aren't the bags on the C14 larger than what the C10 has?

Like gPink says- very few people will think it is worth the effort. Plus the Gen1 compartment interferes more with the bars and certain risers and accessories. Get a tank bag or a top case for the rear (or both).

Ok, thanks for the info. I thought we were discussing 2 different types of tank top compartments. I already have a Givi and am looking into a tank bag, but I always had those on the C-10 as well. The nooks and crannies on the C-10 were numerous and useful to me. There may be some on the C-14, but I have yet to find them. The lack of a right pocket option is troublesome as well. I understand California bikes have the canister there, but you would think Kawi would offer the option for the the other 49 states and the rest of the planet ::)
