Title: PR4's arrived and installed!!
Post by: ZG on January 07, 2014, 03:11:32 PM
My new PR4's arrived this morning, I'm down at my shop right now while they mount em up, rear is on, front is next, I opted to try out my black wheels with the red bodywork to see how it looks...  :-\

Was just curious.  I would NEVER do that, since raising the bike in any way would be a huge no-no for me.

- my local shop,

Yeah, when my time comes this year, I will start with the dealer and see if they are reasonable.  Was your $400 just for the tires, or did that include balance/mount?

Having chicken strips for dinner, are we?  ;D

OFFTOPIC: I am sure you posted it but I cannot remember- did you have those wheels powder coated or painted? If powder coated, did they sandblast the wheels or anything else in the way of prep first? I need to do something with the wheels on my bike but they are too filthy to paint and am wondering if powder coating is any more tolerant of.... grunge.

Welp, scratch that Max... I ordered a 50, but it seems they sent me a 55... I didn't think to look until it was already mounted and then I noticed it said 55, so I guess I'll try out the 55 after all...  :-\

Actually retail was $575, but I get a discount. The $400 was just for the tires, another $75 for the mounting, balance, rotor swap, etc.

Chicken strips indeed, just got home, a very wet PNW day, so I had to take it easy on the new tires on the way home until they scuff up a bit.  :(

I had them powder coated, they media blasted them before the powder coating.  :) 8)

Ooh, that would REALLY **** me off.  But since you are not short-legged, it might work out for you... some people like it.

Correct stock sizes are as follows:
Front: 120/70ZR17M/C (58W)
Rear: 190/50ZR17M/C (73W)

As you know, standing height doesn't reveal leg length.   They are related, but not directly related.

BTW- if you are in my age bracket, 5'8" is not "short".  Average European American male height for those born in the 60's is 5'8" or 5'9" (depending on source), and a few inches either way of the mean would be well within two standard deviations (the typical statistical measure of "normality")  ((yes, I completed far too many credits of statistics in college)).  Just sayin'

But anyway, I put a lot of work into trying to lower the Concours (and it is still not enough), and a taller tire would be very unwelcome....  pretty much "pissed" territory for me :)

Yeah, that's what I figured, I was just looking for an easy way out.... :-)

Time to get mine done and then some- the original silver wheels are really filthy beyond all recognition, especially the front. Not sure if I want to go black though.... it looks great but also shows ever speck of dust and when it dulls back a little it starts to look 'blotchy' sort of. Though they look fantastic when they are nice, new and clean.

Max - I can't seem to find the diameter for Michelin motorcycle tires, so I used those of my own Bridgestone BT016 tires instead. The BT016 190/50ZR17 has a published diameter of 633 mm (24.92 inches), and the 190/55ZR17 diameter is 649 mm (25.55 inches). That difference is 0.63 inches, and since the radius is the part that determines axle height, aka ride height, the difference is 0.315 inches. And since the rider sits about half-way between the mid point between the front and rear axles .. and the rear axle, the ride height with the 55 series tire would be about 0.236 inches (0.315 x 75%) higher than that of the 50 series tire. Less than 1/4".

Sorry ... my woman isn't home yet  ;D  :o  :P  :-*  :'(

Yep, you are absolutely right on.  And I knew this :)  It isn't much, but even 1/4" would be something like removing 20+% of my lowering efforts.  In my case, anyway, using a 55 would be bad- I can just barely manage the bike as it is.  Most people, not concerned with small height gain, can focus on the positive effect of having a likely more accurate speedometer, and some people claim the bike handles better.  Those that do- it would be interesting to know if dropping the front by 1/3" has the same effect with a 50 tire.

I had my C10 wheels done and after 4,000 miles riding our salt encrusted roads they still look great.
I had mine done in satin black and the finish is so much harder wearing than the OEM paint.
Being the same colour as road crud you can wash it once a day, once a week or never.
The wheels always look the same. Only problem is that when ya go to check the tyre pressures yer hands get filthy. <LOL>
Will be doing my C14 wheels this year but also need to figure out if I want to do the Final Drive casing or not.

I don't intend to "thread jack"; but I'm wondering if I can mix a front PR3 with a rear PR4. My PR3 front is still good, and I didn't wasnt to replace it; but I'm having a hard time finding a PR3 rear since the PR4 replaced it.

You are really asking for it, Bourne!

Some folks seem to be able to ride the bike with any tires on it.  They would probably TRY IT, and then know how well it works.  I would do that.

Some folks always have to have the exact OEM tires, inflated to spec, or it doesn't happen.
The fact you are asking the question makes me think you are in this group.  Which is fine.

They know who they are.

Which one are you?

((ducking))

Well, it is not really off topic.  Of course you CAN do it, the question is if it is a good idea or not.  I believe one should NEVER mix different tires on the same axle (if one cares at all about performance and safety).  But that is not an issue on a motorcycle.

Personally, if I were in your situation, I would not hesitate to mix a PR3 with a PR4.  Aside from the fact that they are on different axles, they are still the same manufacturer, style, spec, and even brand, just a newer version.  I think it would be perfectly safe and can't think of any negatives.  Now, if they were significantly different, I would hesitate some.

Max - I just thought you meant to use the word model instead of brand, since to me manufacturer and brand are the same thing. Also, IMO since they're both Pilot Road, they're basically the same model just one being a later version than the other. I shoulda piped down  :-[  :P  :)

Ohhh semantics!

Well, the brand would be Michelin and I think we would all agree on that. I would say that the Pilot Road part would be the series but that sure is a gray area. Once the number is added (PR2, PR3, etc.) I would say that that was just the exact, specific tire.

Yep, it sure is winter....  :rotflmao:

Oh whatever.  I even later looked it up and it is a grey area.  At least they are similar enough that we know mixing the two should be "safe".

OFFTOPIC: about a million years ago, I was in Germany and trying to chat with some Germans (no surprise there) but I did not know the German word for 'gray'. After saying "gray" slowly and loudly a couple of times, I saw that that approach was not working. So I said 'schwartz (German word for black) and weiss (German word for white) and made the pot stirring motion (mixing). BINGO- they said 'Grau', which of course is the German word for gray. :-)

STILL OFFTOPIC!
A friend asked me to help him buy some cigarettes when on vacation in Greece as I speak a few European languages (but not Greek!).
So, I went to the store with him and he told me he wanted 2 packets of a certain Red/White brand.
I walked into the store, paused, smiled at the store owner, held up 2 fingers and said "Marlboro".
My friend was a little embarrassed at his stupidity,...... but I was even more embarrassed the following day to find that the store owner was English. <LOL>

ONTOPIC:
I would mix PR3s and PR4s and probably will as the C14 PR3 front will probably die before the nearly new rear.

Yes, without any doubt but probably not from a motorcycle crash caused by mixing tire brands.

Not sure where / why this brand mixing or even same brand but different type mixing fear comes from. So you put a brand new pair of tires on a motorcycle and begin to wear them out. Say at the 1/2 worn out place, one gets a hole and you replace it- so now one tire is new, one tire is 1/2 worn.... is that some kind of disaster? Next step is mixing two different tires: how can that be bad if they are both applicable to the bike in the first place? I have read that the tire mfg.'s design tires to go with the other tire they also designed but I really do not buy into that but even if I did, how about when the tires are 3/4 worn down or more- did the mfg. design for that too?

There are people who purposefully mix tires, regarding both type and brand, and like the bike that way. Makes sense to me. In fact, I am considering trying out a softer front tire coupled with a more conventional sport touring rear tire. Not quite ready to go to full on sport bike rubber as I do ride in the rain often enough to want more water channels in a tire but perhaps a Pirelli Angel ST front (a pretty soft tire for ST tires) and a Michelin PR3 rear?

And yep, I am pretty sure I am going to die too but not from the above tire combination..... probably :-)

Probably from cars.  Like I said originally, I would never mix brand/type/life tires on the same axle... it could cause performance problems and possibly safety too (different grip, different diameter causing computer issues with ABS or traction control, load shifting, something like that maybe).  Matters very little on different axles, like is always the case on a motorcycle.

It could be for water shedding properties... that's about all I can think of.

I didn't describe what I meant very well.

There are those who say we should not mix tires, or even go so far as to replace only one tire; they should go on as a set. My point was that if a set of tires is 3/4 worn down, which is not an unusual condition to ride a motorcycle in and perfectly acceptable to everyone I think, and if one was replaced, how could the riding qualities / safety of one worn (but perfectly serviceable) tire and one new tire be any worse than both tires worn down 3/4 of the way? That is why I am saying that a lot of the folklore about tires being 'sets' does not make much sense to me.

Now that the topic appears to have completely transitioned to using mismatched tires, I would throw in my two cents that I thought just about every concours owner did this given the crap front tire that came with them.  I ran a PR3 front with the stock rear (was that a dunlop?  I don't even remember) for 6000 miles without issue before swapping the back to a PR3 as well.

I know where max is coming from though with cars, you never want two different tires on the same axle, but it is quite common, especially on trucks and rear wheel drive cars to see a different set of tires on the front and rear especially in areas with a lot of snow.  Check out the tires on any crown vic if your police dept. still uses them.  Like mentioned this doens't really apply to motorcycle, well unless you have a 2 wheel drive ural :P

Now to bring this back on topic, I plan on putting a PR4 GT on the front in a few months while leaving the PR3 on the rear. I was very happy with the PR3 so I'm looking forward to the even better wear on the PR4.

Guess who just got a good deal from his shop today?! This guy!  I went in there the other day just for kicks and he said "BTW, I've got a good price on the first set of PR4's we sell, and it's still up for grabs..."   Got the green light from my better-looking half, and picked them up today!      The caveat is that I have to run the stock tires until they're either toast, or next winter, whichever comes first.  I'm ok with that tho. As much as I ride, I don't see any sense throwing miles of tire use down the drain even tho I freaking hate the stock tires when money's a bit tight.

That thar be a Pelican 1550 case!  I use it to carry my camera gear (my profession).

I had it on my old 650, and when I got the connie, I took the luggage rack off to trace the holes, drilled, and ran longer bolts through the bottom of the case and luggage rack to the factory mounting points, and bam!  5 minutes and it was mounted.

EDIT:  I definitely want to get one of phils racks eventually.  As it sits the pelican case bounces quite a bit from flex in the plastic on the case.

Bike Bandit doesn't carry PR4GT 190/50ZR17 for some reason.  And fronts are backordered.
Revzilla is still out of stock on front but has the rear.  And you can't get the price if it is not available.
Motorycycle Superstore is still out of stock on the front but has the rear.  Factory size set for $359 shipped.

My local dealer said $100 to mount/balance rear and $80 to mount/balance front.  Then add another $40 if I don't the tires from them (and they want a crazy $455 for the set after my special discount)

I wonder if the dealer can actually get the fronts.  I don't seem to have a lot of options right now, and I need tires very soon :(  Damnit

I went to another dealer (that I trust far less), they quoted $77 for the front and $77 for rear if I buy from somewhere else and $50 each if I buy through them (and they wanted the whopping $542.80 for the pair!).

It this works out the way it SHOULD work out, I shouldn't have to pay for mounting/balance at all because of the stupid tire pressure sensors......

Oh, do expect one.  Not sure how fair it will be, because the front tire is now pretty scary so it would be comparing a really screwed up end-of-life tire to a nice new one.  I have a feeling since this install is tied to the TPS drama, it might be quite a while before it is finished.

Quote

Absolutely not!  I can't have ANY raising of the bike, even if it is a little.... it is hard enough to deal with right now!!  But for those not leg-length challenged, it is probably a good option, since it would at least correct the speedometer.

Had the TPMS battery issue on mine.  Thought I'd swing some swing a deal on tire-change labor while they were dealing with the TPMS issue.  Bought the tires at the dealer for 180+110.  I thought this was a decent price based on revzilla and motorcycle-superstore prices.  They didn't charge labor on the tire change.

I have nothing to compare these to except stock.  But what a difference all the way around.  Great tire! Akin to going from stock to the Metz on my M109r.

After seemingly forever, I got the bike back from the dealer after work (with both TPS replaced and the new PR4's installed).  After some chores, I took it out for a test ride, about 40 miles.  HOLY MOTHER.  I can't believe how scary my tires had become before.   What a PLEASURE to drive now... I had completely forgotten.  It is truly amazing how we can become accustomed to really horrible situations.  The previous front tire was so strangely worn on the OEM Bridgestones, I never knew what it was going to do and riding was a constant, frustrating fight.  Wanting to fall over, or not being able to turn, or partially through a turn wanting to change direction.  Even just lane changes were a chore.

Now I have to be careful- my confidence jumped so high, I am going a lot faster.

Rear was mounted and balanced in under 30 minutes.
