Yikes, no. 30's are way too cold for me.
No pic, it didn't happen...
Well, a picture of a dash doesn't prove anything, anyway...
-
Its been 2 degrees C ...er ...don't know what that is in F. Might turn on the heated grips if it drops. 8)

Heading east out of Alpine TX in march last year it was in the mid 30s but we rode into a weird patch of cold that lasted for about 10 miles. Temp gauge suddenly dropped to 20F. Faceshield frosted up and I had to flip it open in order to see. Sheet off ice popped off. I was worried about ice on the road. I was not inclined to try to pull out my camera under the circumstances so I guess it didn't really happen.
If I can help it, I don't ride when it's below 35.
-
Whelp since SIlverdammit of the Gen1 variety doesn't have no stinking gauge for whimper status you'll just have to trust me when I tell ya the low teens, single digits on the F8GS. Gerbings Jacket, Hippohands, and smart wool socks are my friend ;D

Teens many times, no pics though because the 08/09 has no dash temp display... :(

On a 1996 Triumph Trident 900 naked bike. I rode 160 miles and worked outside for 8 hours. High temperature of the day was 5 deg F. I remember I had to wrap a scarf around my head just leaving an eye slot to see before putting on my helmet. I even put a winter hat down the front of my pants to keep the cold out. Every driveway I rode on was pure ice, but the roads were great. This was not my favorite rides, but one I'll never forget. Any temp over 20 deg and dry I'll commute to Boston for work from Wells Maine on my C-14. I don't own any heated gear, but have been considering it more and more lately.
Sorry no pictures.

How far did you ride?
-
-20C (-4F) in southern Germany in Feb 1983.
Followed the snowplough into the depot near the Munich "ringroad" as had no choice. (3' of snow except where they had ploughed)
They gave me tea in their nice heated office while the icicles between my nose and top lip melted. (yeah, painful!)
No pics as even if I'd had a camera my fingers would not have been able to operate the buttons, despite the heated gloves, trousers, jacket & socks.
45 mins later followed another snowplough into Munich but after dropping the bike 3 times I walked the last 2 miles to where I was going.
In Munich it warmed up to a balmy -13C (+9F) but that just made the snow more slippery.
I ended up stuck in Munchen for a week. Was fun! :P

+1 or 2. 20f for me the other day.

A few years back I rode my Fatboy about 65 miles to the dealer to have some work done.
16 f when I left the house. About 18 f when I got there.
Fingerless gloves were all I had so I stopped about every 10 miles to warm my hands on the engine.
Can't say it helped any because I had deep muscle tremors for about 2 hours afterwards.
But I came home with a good pair of gloves.
Aaahhh. The memories .

Last week, taking the bike to my brothers place for winter storage...

Well, there was this one time, in band camp....

Got caught in a blizzard in May at the N. rim of the Grand Canyon, The windscreen iced up, then my face shield and finally even my glasses iced up. I never bothered to look at the thermometer.
Second photo, Bryce Canyon this last Sept., 27 degrees, I delayed riding until it warmed up to 30 in spite of my wife's advice.
For future reference, to convert Centigrade to Fahrenheit; Double the number, subtract 10%, Add 32.. IE: 20C, double = 40, sub. 10% (4) = 36, add 32 = 68F.

25-35 deg F is pretty common riding to work from Nov thru Dec here from Canon city to Colorado Springs
might even use my electric gloves tomorrow:)
below 25deg for 35 mile commute gets a bit chilly, so I usually put it away in January
just for a little while, tho

You waited at a gas station for all the snow and ice to melt? I can't imagine EVER trying to ride on snow or ice on a motorcycle. That seems totally insane to me.
-
Riding a standard dirt bike (motocross) with standard knobbies, in the snow, is a GAS! Bear in mind that given at least 5 or 6 inches of snow will really dampen the inevitable fall and slide that is coming, although done at high speed (dirt bike high speed- what, 40 MPH?) you would not believe how many places the snow will get into. :yikes:
That aside, no normal, sane person would choose to ride a C-14 in the snow. But it occasionally happens that we who ride in colder climates occasionally do get stuck in a position where we have little choice. I have ridden my C-14 in the snow perhaps 4 or 5 times- both actively snowing (that is how I know that the air that comes into the vent hole in the windshield actually passes over my head) as well as snow on the ground. If you are thirty miles from home and it starts snowing you can forge ahead carefully or put up and then do something really difficult like get a tow or rent a trailer or something. I have also ridden 2-up in snow on a C-14 and my wife does not care for it either- but she didn't get off either. <shrugs shoulders>
And people get caught in snow when traveling, like Phil- going through a mountain pass in the spring or fall it may start to snow and what can you do? Stop on the side of the road and you are likely to get hit and all the while the snow is getting deeper.
Brian

I'm not even remotely normal. Mine was a Z1300/6.
And people get caught in snow when traveling
Yup, I didn't plan to ride in deep snow, I just got caught in bad weather whilst away from home.
Back then the weather forecasts were more of a weather guess.
I had the choice of 100Miles to Munich or 400Miles to get home.
Took me nearly 7 hours to do that 100Miles and the last 2 were on foot, but I made it.
The weather was so bad I ended up staying for a week.
The yummy little receptionist from the Munich office had nothing to do with it. :P :-*
-
When I bought the C10 in march it snowed on the way back home. My wife gave me a lift there....and decided to go shopping on the way back...in the snow. She had the satnav and I followed her to an Aldi carpark. Then I had some choice words about her timing and we went home. Her sulking and me shi**ing myself with 1/4 ton of bike twitching for 40 odd miles. Lovely ;D John

Teens many times as well. No temp gauge on the 2009.

I have colleagues at the office who drive all year, no matter what. In Munich temps can go to -20°C sometimes (-4°F). Some of them are BMWs with special permits from the town-hall to mount tires with spikes :o
And they don't drive exactly slow...
Me? I'm an elephant and a snow flake is the mouse :-[
2°C (35-36°F) is my lower limit. Not physically; more mental. I just do not dare.
-
I have been in the single digits many times. Saw 19F on Black Friday. Next time I'll take a pic.
-
Took my wife to work a couple weeks ago. She wanted to take her little V-Star 250 2-up (She's not endorsed yet) but I saw the frost on the cars and decided I wanted the traction control, windscreen, etc. Good decision cause it was 20*F out!
-
I took the bike down from Wells, Maine to New Haven, Connecticut. I am working down here all week. It will only be about 600 miles for the week, but that isn't too bad up here in December. Looks like the weather is already turning against me. I leave work just after midnight Friday and they are now expecting a rain snow mix. I might have to ride home the coastal route.
-
I have ridden my old '86 Goldwing Aspencade in the snow quite a few times, usually on a trip and got caught in it. One day, and no I hadn't been drinking, I decided to take the Goldwing out in freezing rain, "just to see." I got dressed and ventured out, my then wife waited at home patiently, she was used to me by then. I rode the completely ice covered road behind my plan to the front of the plan, about 1/8 of a mile. I then had a choice, turn left uphill to go back to the house on the main road, or turn right downhill then do a u-turn on a flat section to go home. I turned right, turned around on the flat section, then once I got near the house had to turn and go downhill to the back road and turn right again to go to the garage. All the roads were 100 percent ice covered on top of frozen snow.
I made it without any issues, but I was beat when I got back. I also didn't plan on doing it again anytime soon. Surprisingly though, without making any sudden changes in direction or hard braking or acceleration, I never slipped. Still, don't want to do it on that big of a bike again, at least not on ice.
I run into a little ice at times when riding around Pittsburgh in the Winter. It is inevitable when it gets bellow freezing. I just ride a lot differently in the Winter than I do any other time of the year. I find I am more leery of wet leaves on the road in the Fall. In the Winter I just expect things to be slippery in places.

We've had a bit of a cold snap here in Oregon. I have a take home work bike (Honda ST1300P) and ride every day. Yesterday morning it was 22 degrees when I left the house and this morning it was 19 degrees. Next week we may see a little lower than that. I've gotten pretty good at layering clothing and heated grips with Hippo Hands come in very handy. Sorry, no pics since it wasn't on my Connie but still riding in the teens nevertheless.
-
Well done!!!!
-
Well I wasn't on a bike but I was just out plowing snow on an ATV in -5 temps. My Honda Rincon has heated grips but doesn't help the throttle thumb. Had to tape a chemical hand warmer to the thumb to keep it from getting frost bit. The only good thing when it is this cold is that snow can't melt a little and turn into ice. Even where it was well packed down from driving on it I could push it off.

I always wondered why ATV and snowmobiles have a thumb control throttle instead of a twist grip? When I crashed my snowmobile a few years ago and broke my hand, it was the thumb throttle that did the damage.

Tonight is the night for my commute home. It looks like I'll be caught in a good hit of snow from Mass, New Hampshire, and Maine. Hopefully it is wet enough not to add up too much on the highways.

Me too! I think the people who race the sport ATV's all convert them to twist grip. I once hit a big rock and wasn't holding the handle bars tight. They kicked back and badly sprained my thumb. I was about 5 miles from the truck. That was a long 5 miles.

I rode a pretty uncomfortable ride last night. I left New Haven, Ct. and headed to Wells, Me. It was pouring rain up to Worcester, and then the freezing rain/snow mix kicked in. I stopped for gas in Lowell and didn't even take time for the warm coffee and warmth I was craving. I knew I would never get going again. So I kept on trucking. It turned into all snow in New Hampshire for the rest of the ride home. I still made good time. Under four hours. I should add my good rain gear was at home. All I found was an extra lg (way to small) El cheapo Home Depot rain suit. It didn't fit too good over my Columbia Parka. The best part of all was that my helmet shield wouldn't stay clear of fog, because I was already wet from working in this crap. I was taken good care of by the wife when I got home. I was warm in no time. That is what I get when I plan a week away trip in December on a bike.

Joel, thanks for the report, I was wondering how the trip went. Next time consider the TDi :)

Oh man sign me up! The warmest I've seen in 4 days is 6 degrees.
-
I live two hours south of Steve so it's even warmer here and I'm sick of it!
It IS December for God's sake.
Still have windows closed and the air on!
-
Got in a little ride of about 160 miles this am going to see a friend of mine in the VA hospital in Tuskeegee, Al.
Heavy mist and rain on the way there. The fog got so thick on the way home I could only see about 100 yards ahead.
And cold as heck--it musta got down to 50 f or so. It was terrible. ;)

Yeesh. Hasn't been OVER 40F here in two days (nor have we seen the sun, nor has the mist/rain stopped). I will be more than happy to trade you some of this stuff.

Now that right there is truly scary. That isn't a cold front coming through, it is a less- ungodly period of kinda' warm. Whatch' got there is-
Today: too hot to ride
Sun: too hot to ride
Mon: too hot to ride
Tues: too hot to ride but less unpleasant walking out to the air conditioned car.
Wed: Warm for riding but OK in mesh gear that is light in color, and no sitting at stop lights in the full sun.
Thurs: Same as Wed. but the last of the less unpleasant weather in sight.
Fri: a harbinger of things to come and too hot to ride; better stay inside.

Yeah, but I am a temperature wuss. Hot, even warm by most people's standards, makes me miserable. I spent 4 or maybe 5 days one day in South Dakota watching my temp. gauge read 102.X and it was three clicks beyond horrible. But even 85 makes me uncomfortable and cranky.
Cold on the other hand, can be defended against. Not to say that 40 below zero is anything even remotely close to 'nice' but even down in the 20's F one can layer, cover and use heated gear against it.
Just call me Mary Jane Thermometerpants. :-)

About 1982 I had a Suzuki GS 750. One morning it was -2F and I went out to just ride it around the block just to say "I did it." Unfortunately, the oil must have been the consistency of wax and the starter just groaned and wouldn't turn over. So right now my personal record is 14F.

Hey Teach, why is the temp in C but the miles are not Ks?
Hi
That's just the way the clocks are set; as far as I know I can change miles to km and centigrade to fahrenheit independently of each other, but centigrade and miles are what we work in over in the UK- all weather forecasts are given in centigrade these days
:)
-
Haven't completely embraced the metric system yet? :)
-
In the UK we use the metric system,.... except where we don't.
Beer is served in pubs in Pints but in cans & bottles in millilitres, 568ml to be exact which equals 1 UK pint.
(We don't have little girly pints like y'all do) 8) ;D
Gas is sold in litres but we use Miles Per Gallon to measure fuel economy.
If I go to a lumber yard and buy a piece of 8'x4' it is actually 240cm x 120cm (slightly smaller than 8x4)
McDs still sell Quarterpounders but they are actually 110 grammes uncooked weight.
And we drive on the left! ;D
-
If you all spoke Spanish you would have a perfectly backwards society. ::)

It's finally warmed up to above freezing here. The lowest temp I saw on my ST1300 was 12 degrees. It actually wasn't too bad since the air was so dry. When I rode to work day before yesterday I hit some freezing fog and the windscreen iced over but ODOT did a great job with the de-icer and the roads were clear...I just had to be careful on side streets and parking lots. I never thought I would call 49 degrees with light rain warm but that's a cake walk compared to the last week and a half.

My record is 8F. I don't have a screenshot of a temp gauge because I didn't have one on my 2006 Sprint ST at the time. With the heated grips on my new Concours, that'll be a easy. :)
I'll ride at any temp as long as the roads are clear. Get some snow or moisture on the road when it's below 30F and I'll take the car.'

This is considered cold for southeast Texas.
-
Your bike fall over on the ice?
-
18 is my lowest. I did not enjoy that.
-
20 degrees on the ride in this morning. Dang seat didn't even warm up until I pulled into the parking lot at work. ;D
-
The problem with cold riding for me is that I do use heated gear and I'm not really that cold even riding in sub 30 degree weather. Once I get inside and stop using the heated gear I freeze for at least an hour. The heated gear spoils me, however I won't ride without it in the cold or even the nearly cold weather.
-

My Sargent World seat gets so hot, it is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable. I had it parallel on a single controller with my heated vest. That has just never worked right so I suffered for years. I don't want two controllers up front, so I FINALLY installed a controller under the seat so I could cut the power going from the main controller to just the seat in half (like a bias control). NOW it is quite nice :)
-
Someone stole my neck gaiter yesterday, and I couldn't find my wifes fleece one, so I just had to go with the new balaclava by itself without the extra insulation. Then the side zipper on my winter pants broke... The wind was crazy too! 20 degrees wasn't plesent today... :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown

Lucky for me I have been working 200+ miles from home, or I'd still be pushing for a day here and there on the bike. I am getting itchy though. 5+ inches in New Haven CT. today so I am not missing the bike that much.
