I tried to narrow the list down to what would substain you and what the pioneer's had on their journey across the plains... and something that would ward off disease and famine, and a replacement fuel for heat and cooking that could be used anywhere basically
Beans
Rice
Flour
Corn Meal
Water
Ammo
Propane
Vitamin C
Please add............
-
Alcohol, used to disinfect, clean, and always good after a long day on the trail.
-
Beer and TV

I was being serious. This is straight out of the US Army Survival Guide.
"During the Southeast Asian conflict, soldiers used antifungal powders, lye
soap, chlorine bleach, alcohol, vinegar, concentrated salt water, and iodine to treat fungal infections with
varying degrees of success."
-
Beans
Rice
Flour
Corn Meal
(wouldn't eat the above four personally other than to avert starvation. Maybe rice.)
Water
Ammo
Propane
Vitamin C
Dried veggies
Dried meats
Gasoline
Diesel
Kerosene/heating fuel for stove
Charcoal
Scotch/wine (seriously - tradeable commodity even if you don't drink)
Various food preservation chemicals
Water disinfection tablets
Toilet paper
-
I was serious as well. I'm a tv junkie. It doesn't have to be large screen, just something that runs on batteries that I can recharge via the sun or some other means and beer, I have to have beer. I could subsist on water but what's the point? I could keep the beer cool in a stream as I would have to have some water source that could be sterilized. Bottled water only goes so far.

Since this is modern day and not pioneer days I would add;
Portable radio & extra batteries
Cell phone / smart phone
Flash light & extra batteries
Solar or crank charging source for cell
12 Gauge & shells for protecting all of the things we have listed from starving people - or zombies
-
No one mentioned our wives, girlfriends, or dates? (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j180/stevewfl/avatars/eek.gif)
OK I will.....
WIMINZ! :D
-
Key point. Thanks, Steve! I was being overly selfish in my thoughts and you brought me back to reality.
-
Ammo won't do you any good without something to use it in.
guns
fishing equipment

I'm going to assume we're in the SHTF mode, so I'd expect cell phones to be useless. Instead, I'm bringing a battery operated 2m ham radio. (Or, even better, a 2m/440) Listening to a radio is handy, but actual communication is far better.

Gotta have a blade of some sort. A gun will only last as long as the bullets. A sword will last as long as the arm that wields it.
-
Stuff from around the house:
moth balls
lye soap
gasoline
detergent
bottles
rags
stick matches
pipe
wax
etc

Someone mention my name? Sword for hire... Actually, I think that's a really good idea but something other than a broadsword but longer than a Roman short sword.
-
Flour
Yeast (or sourdough starter)
Lard (as it keeps somewhat well)
Dried beans
Sugar
Coffee
Dried fruit
Knife (maybe two or three)
Lead, and a small lead dispenser.
Fiskin supplies (line and hooks)
First aid kit, small.
Saw, 16-18" blade
Matches/lighter
Visa/Mastercard
Gin
Rick
-
Iodine
silver & gold
salt
dried meats

MT beer cans make great fork brace shim material too.... Ask Murph!
-
We have a 48 hour kit at the house. Actually my wife put it together - our Church is big on preparedness for emergency. It contains quite a few cans of oatmeals. We canned it ourselves. Few non-perishable canned food. Few jugs of drinking water - we rotate those every week to keep fresh. Flash light and spare batteries. First aid kit. Think few warm blankets. I will have to go look what else the stash contains. Oh as far as weapon goes, just a big knife and a pellet gun....guess short on that department.
-
The pellet gun would work on small animals (squirrels, rabbits, birds, whatever) if it has sufficient power. Not much on holding a man sized animal up unless you are a very good shot.

BUT...you are preparing! that is good......if you have a natural or man made disaster at least you can go a few days..... ;D
-
Duct tape and bailing wire/twine. Small axe, one folding and one fixed blade knives. Fire making kit, pot to cook in/boil water in/collect water. Small canvas tarp. Dental floss, awl, and heavy duty needle. Book describing edible plants. Silvera's address, I think she may have the guns and ammo covered.

Sand whistles/tampons? I forgot the sanitary napkins when I said a trauma kit, best things for stuffing into a bleeding wound.

.22lr rifle (ammo plentiful, cheap, buy in bulk, small game weapon, also deadly against bad guys if needed, could be most important gun in your collection)
Dependable rifle in .223/5.56 (popular NATO round, many guns shoot it, relatively cheap to buy ammo in bulk)
Dependable rifle in 7.62x39 (popular NATO round, many guns shoot it, cheap to buy ammo in bulk)

Ditto...I would add a 12 gauge...same reasons....
I agree that the .22 RF is widly underlooked.....very valuable round in any situation.
