Title: Billet threaded gas caps?
Post by: GIXXERKELLY on March 27, 2012, 05:24:59 AM
Does anyone make a threaded gas cap for the Connie 14? I see some of the more popular sport bikes have them. It would be nice to not have to pull a key out every time for a fill up.

You might try searching the web for a ZX-14 gas cap.  It should fit.  I don't think there's any difference in the cap.  You didn't specify model but the 08 cap part number is different from the 09/10/+ number.  There's a difference I didn't know about.  There may also be a difference in US vs CA models as well.  Didn't look that up.  However, if you have an 09/10 C14 the cap from a ZX14 of the same years is the same.  You'll have more choices to look at if you go the ZX14.  Many of their parts are interchangeable.

One way to look these parts up is through sites like www.ronayers.com (http://www.ronayers.com) .

I see your point, but

1) Locked filler protects from gas tampering.
2) No stealing $4+/gal gas!
3) Wouldn't a threaded cap stick up high and look kinda strange?

I had a spare key cut by a locksmith for use with the bags and the gas filler.  I never remove the stovekey (nor fiddle with the fob pseudo key).

Actually, no.  The ones I saw on the web for the ZX14 looked very nice and some of them had quarter turn race caps.  They looked flush mount to me.

Ah, it must be a whole assembly of some sort and not just a cap like I think of on a car.  Sorry, I haven't actually seen one before.

It is a 2010.

You are right the 2010 ZX-14 is the same part number. I'm going to order one. I hate removing the key just to fill up. I've never had issues with anyone trying to steal gas from my vehicles over the years so, I'll take a chance.

Do a Google search on these words 'billet gas cap zx-14'.  I had a whole bunch of hits.

It bolted right up and seems to work fine. I road for about 20 miles after installing it. Very simple install. Open the existing gas cap with the key remove the one forward screw and the back two screws. Install the ZX-14 billet cap with the existing 3 screws removed and that's it.

I came close to that one but, it did not list my year model for the ZX-14 cross reference. Not sure if the part number is the same.

Yea he had a little disclaimer in the package. Funny how it wasn't mentioned in the description. I'll have it powder coated when it does.

Mine came in and it did not work. It sits too high. Ad says it is for 2006-2008 ZX-14. Dunno. The ones someone else posted on here was for 2006-2010 ZX-14 so I don't know what the deal is...ugh

so, just out of curiosity....how is the subject of tank venting addressed when this "replacement" is installed.....just asking. ::)

also, what exactly seals the threaded cap, to the yolk....? I assume that rubber gasket is installed on the bottom of the yolk to the tank interface.... so what seals the top?
Also, because some of us DO ride in the rain, how is the issue of water ingress, below the yolk, addresed?

I might be asking silly questions (but I don't think so...personally, the only stupid question is the one un-asked....I asked 3 so I must be tripple silly) :rotflmao: :hitfan: :stirpot:

but that's what they pay me for.... ;)
Title: Re: Billet threaded gas caps?

There is a little assy in there that looks to be a vent. Cant imagine what else it could be.

yes, I see what you are saying (I see the little ports), but 'splain how this is working, thinking about the other questions I asked.... ::)
I don't have one in hand, but if the bottom surface of the screw in "cap" is fully covered in rubber, i can't see this working. and If it isn't, you have NO seal other than the aluminum threads....getting where I'm leading to?
 ;)
and any water that gets "under" the assembled yolk needs to go somewhere also...least it will sit there rusting the tank.

thanks.

so anyone out there with this replacement care to help us all out, and show us the part, and tell us the answers to the questions I posed? It would be beneficial seeing as people are posting links to buy something, without knowing fully the ramafications of the installation, and the full outcome, once the bike is subjected to a 500 mile run drinking from the firehose, or simply sitting in a parking lot, all day, in Arizona sun.....both of which just might be problematic..... ;)
seeing as this is a sport touring bike, not specifically a race bike....and most of us don't have these hanging around....

"Quarter-turn"!

The billet gas cap on my old R1. The maker used these pics on their web page, and I didn't even know how to use a camera back then. I bought the cap for track duty, but it was pure sweet sex bling too.

The cap came in Saturday. It was a quick and simple swap (just three screws).
IMHO this is a very well made part. It's very simular to the ones in the photos that stevewfl posted (OPP Racing), but is much cheeper.
And for less than $50 to my door, I'm more than happy with my purchase.

The other style wanted grease on the threads, which didn't last long and then became hard to screw on with the fine threads.  How does that quarter turn work?
Title: Re: Billet threaded gas caps?

Seals with an o-ring and the cap is held in place by a bolted on tab that mates with two groves that are machined into the base. The center of the cap is spring loaded so that there is a clamping force that keeps the o-ring tight against the base when the cap is in place. It's a simple and effective design IMHO.

I originally ordered a silver base with a black cap. Then I was thinking the black cap might be hard to find after dropping it. They said that they had a black base and silver cap in stock, I said to send that. I am glad I did. Looks great.

Thanks very much!  I just realized I'm spending waaaay too much money on accessories, so this one is not going to happen....My $14,000 2013 is turning into an $18,000 bike....

You're a real piker. I think I'm well past $20,000 in my 2012 C14. If I wanted to be exact I could ask my wife. I'm sure she is keeping a tally somewhere.

Unfortunately there's a huge difference between buying stuff because you have lots of extra money to spend, and buying stuff that you can't really afford...but it just makes me want to ride it more to get my moneys worth!!!

With the first, threaded type, the cortech locking tank bag works and fits fine.

Mine is also colorfast, so they must have changed something in the past two years.

You were right, MOB. The vent is ignored and could be an issue. I just installed my keyless one today. Any feedback from people that use one? Mine is a quarter turn style.

One of my short short bolts fell right in the tank. I had the cap open because I thought there was a hidden fastener in there. Oops. ???

I'm not sweating it. 8)

This is the one I bought / installed. It works great and I think it looks good too. Fast shipping even though they say China

I just noticed this is posted above. MoB  ... I went on a 200 mile blast and didn't have any venting problems averaging 80-85.
