Mixing Rotella T's
« on: March 03, 2012, 04:14:29 PM »
I know there are some guys here with a lot of oil knowledge,

I ran out of Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40.  Any problems with topping off with 2 pints of Rotella T HD 15w-40 I have. Both are CJ-4.

Other than it increasing the viscosity (not much if you're only using 2 pints), I don't see a problem with it.  I'd do it if it was all I had on hand at the time.

But then, I use Wing sized tires, mix bias and radial tires, rarely wash my bike, run synthetic truck oil, cut off my rear fender, performed a bafflectomy, and a host of other things that some people tell you should never be done.   :loco:

In the early days of synthetics, there was (supposedly) a problem with mixing synth and dino oils.  But that time has long since passed.

I run only Rotella T in everything that I do the maintenance.  So I have a few grades and both Dino and Synthetic out in the garage.  I don't mix as a regular course but rather than run out an buy another gallon when I need a pint to top off a sump, I'll add another grade and/or type.

Let see here, 9th bike, lots of mixed oil over the years, no oil related problems. OK now.

I did read a thread recently where someone stated that you should not mix synth and non synth. I silently wondered about that statement, but no one made any comment. I had never heard anyone say that before, and I had always thought they were sympatico........looks like no one here disagrees with that theory.

edit to add: I did a quick google on this and here is what Amsoil has to say

http://www.synthetic-motor-oil-change-and-filters.com/amsoil_articles/myths-of-synthetic-oils/

and this from Mobil

and from Valvoline

My question to whoever says you cant or shouldnt mix the two is, how do they make semi-synthetic then?!?!?!?
And then Id stop taking any advice from said person....or at least verify whatever they tell you after that.

Back on the original topic....

Mixing different weights of oils?
