Title: Clunking alternator?
Post by: TXIN on February 07, 2012, 09:48:33 PM
I posted a video a few months ago about a random noise that I thought was coming from the top end of the motor, like, maybe the CCT... well, now I'm pretty sure it's the alternator. I put my hand on the alternator and when I hear the clack/clunk noise, I feel it through the alternator casing. What kind of skill level are we talking about to rebuild/fix that? Can I do it with just a manual and the proper tools? Or is this one of those "you should really have someone help you with the first one" kind of thing?

I think it's pretty trivial, just pull the alternator off and check the nut on the end.

SISF had writ something about it at some stage, said it was the nut on the end of the alternator needed tightening up as far as I recall.

YUP! sounds right to me. If it is, it's a cheap fix.

Yup, easy. there's a 6mm bolt holding the end of the drive onto the splines. it gets loose and rattles. Made me crazy tll I found it, it sounded just like gas knock, which I can't abide... steve
