My motor is starting to use a bit of oil, about 24 oz it 500-600 miles. It is an 86. I am not sure if I want to fix or just get another Connie. I have so many new parts in it I am thinking of fixing it. New tires, bearings, carbs and exhaust cam from SISF, heated grips, HID, rebuilt brakes, new rotor and more. I know I could switch alot of parts but many wont work on the later model. What are my options for the motor?
Buy used? Most seem to want almost as much as for a bike.
Put rings in? I have never been a fan of just ringing a motor
Have it bored? Most likely the best route to go but pistons are pricey
Decisions, decisions. Mine is nit one of those 250,000 mile bikes!

24 0z in 5-600 mies? is it pouring it on the ground or looking like a mosquito fogger?
Personally, i haven't seen this issue. Maybe the bike has injested a bunch of sand in it's early life, maybe overheated... dunno. Are you sure it's coming from the rings, or could it be the valve stem seals? Since the 86 heads are questionable anyways because of the potential of soft valves, if the problem turns out to be the valve guides I'd just replace the head and be done with it. If you're going to do pistons / rings, I gotta tell you, the 1052 engines I've built have all had used pistons / rings, and they have no issues, so I wouldn't be afraid to use used pistons / rings. Heck, I may even have a set around here somewheres - Steve

I replaced the head when I got the bike with about 25,000 showing on the clock. There was little to no adjustment left. The bike always used a little oil but it slowly increased. I am one of those that keep a a notebook of every mod, fillup, and such so I noticed the steady increase. I rode at dusk yesterday and when I get on it hard there will be no skeeters behind me! Just revving it does without load is pretty smokeless but under hard acceleration it pours out. I was looking for the link on the big bore mod Steve but couldn't find it.

Steve, It does not leak a drop. I am unsure of what is causing the burning oil. I suppose a compression chech will shed more light on it.
