Title: poor boy c10 fix
Post by: IAkawboy on October 03, 2024, 03:23:08 PM
Somewhat recently, I and my connie were involved in a hit and run incident on the interstate running thru town. I was fine, bike was a little thrashed, as it took off the peg of the shifter, my foot peg mount, and broke the left saddle bag frame and cracked the bag.
Was able to ride it home after a buddy supplied me a vise grip to use as a shifter.

anyhow, being the poor boy that I am, after perusing different ebay listings for some replacement parts for most of the pieces, the one part that i couldn't see paying exorbitant prices for, was the aluminum saddle bag mount frame.

after some cogitation, and maybe a little cyphering (Jethro Bodine moment intensifies here) I found that the local TSC had in stock C- channel steel that was roughly the same measurements as the oem aluminum framus.

after using my eye-crometer and maybe a tape measure, I welded up an operable/usable saddle bag mount frame, of my own design, for a quite a bit less than what used pieces were going for.

ol' Cantankerous Connie and I are whole again, and I got my knees in the breeze again, with luggage space!

Depending on what broke, and whether you have the pieces, you can get the original antler aluminium TIG welded or just bolt the pieces together with a piece of flat sheet either side of the break.
Some places baulk at welding "pot metal" but the C10 antlers are pretty much pure aluminium, just cast rather than forged.
