Title: Austria GCE Rally
Post by: Boomer on August 15, 2024, 05:05:50 AM
On Tuesday I got back from the GCE (GTR Club Europe) Rally based at Hotel Alpenblick in St Lorenzen ob Murau.
Had a blast, some great rides, met old and new friends, got soaked in a couple of rainstorms, cooked in 37C weather, but overall had fun.
Covered 2400miles on my C14 ""Vivian" who, apart from the occasional cold stall, performed impeccably and was a blast in the Austrian twisties.
I now know that although the Corbin is better than the OEM, it is not comfy enough for me on long rides. I see an RDL in my near future.

The Carpuride 702 I bought for the trip is at best pretty poor. It resets every so often, regularly drops Android Auto connections, the mapping software is awful, and the power button is damned near impossible to operate with gloves on. Very unimpressed!
On the other hand the CardoHD I bought to stay in contact with my riding buddy Simon Farnell worked very well despite their sticky pad not wanting to stay stuck to my lid.
Some 3M pads soon sorted that out, but have fitted the clip mount now instead.

I've had excellent luck with Cardo's stuff. Been running PackTalk Bolds for many years. Super happy with them. I even bought one of their headsets so I can use it with the race car too.

As far as the Carpuride goes, I'm sorry it sucks. I've been using some cheapo deal from AliExpress and I love it. Works FANTASTIC. It uses android's carplay equivalent or apple carplay. So when I use my phone, it uses whatever map app I'm using on there. I've used both Google and Waze on my iphone and it works great. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806507243787.html

From what I can tell the problem is with Android Auto and Carpurides implementation of it.
I need to check my power cable wiring and route it more stably to ensure that the power drops are not due to a bad cable.
There are lots of issues raised online with Android Auto losing the connection, both with wired and wireless (Bluetooth & WiFi), for no obvious reason.
Google are working to resolve the issues but so far it is not great.
Most people who are using these with Apple CarPlay seem very happy with it, but the Android Auto side is not great.

To be fair, the screen is excellent and the mapping got me across Europe and back again, albeit with constant resets (Power-off > Power-on).
The music player/controller works OK but I couldn't get any other Android App to work on the screen.
What would be better would be a full waterproof Android tablet that just uses your cellphone as a mobile-hotspot for connectivity.
That way you get Google Maps and not an interpretation of it, and can run whatever App you want to rather than a very limited subset.

That's actually a pretty brilliant idea. Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2, renewed is only $80 for the wifi only version. Resistant to all the right things. That would make a pretty capable and legit dash unit.  https://a.co/d/gxRkuis

As I am not going to click on the link until I know more, where does it take you?

Just amazon's shortened URL system. Here's the full-length link for the noted Samsung. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T323KZ3

That Samsung might work but it is pretty dated (Android 7.1) and only has 3GB RAM/16GB of storage, so you won't be able to load many apps.

I would think something like this would be more suitable https://www.amazon.com/OUKITEL-RT3-Rugged-Android-Tablet/dp/B0CL4G63F2 (https://www.amazon.com/OUKITEL-RT3-Rugged-Android-Tablet/dp/B0CL4G63F2)
You would need to fabricate or buy (RAM Tab-Tite?) some type of mount for it, but otherwise it will be more than adequate for whatever SatNav app you want to run as well as music and any other app.
I am going to persist with the Carpuride for now and see if I can get any joy with the issues I have with it, but for the future I may well end up with something like the above on my bars.
