Title: Engine oil leak @ clutch slave cylinder area
Post by: Freightshakertech on June 15, 2015, 01:28:18 AM
Hi guys. I have an engine oil leak coming from the left side by the clutch cylinder area. I have a shop manual but its not clear if there is any gasket/seal for the cylinder to the case or if any of the bolts could be leaking past the threads.  I've cleaned it a few times and it seems to be coming from one of the bolts.  I'm hoping there is not a crack in anything but I've not ruled it out. Has anyone else experienced this type of leak?  I'm wanting to remove the cylinder and see if there is anything there to make sense of. The manual does not show any thing that can be helpful. So I'm appealing to you guys to see if you can shed some light on this. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. My Connie is a 2000 model with right at 46k on it now  :)

I've attached a pic of the area for review. It is coming from the bottom bolt of the 3 bolts.

Almost certinly your clutch push-rod seal behind the clutch slave cylinder... Very easy to replace just don't knock it or the new one in the motor...

newbie question...

T Cro, what do you mean by don't knock it or the new one in the motor?

when the seal is installed, there is no positive stop, or shoulder in that bore, therefore it is possible to either push the old one in too far, when attempting to pull it, or pushing the new one in too far on install. same issue replacing the shift shaft seal, or balancer shaft seal on the opposite side....

common replacement on those is usually done by using a small drill bit in a dremel tool, and carefully drilling a hole in the face of the seal, then installing a sheetmetal screw, carefully, and pulling the seal out with pliers...
luckily you can pull the clutch actuator rod carefully out, and using an old screwdriver with a 90* bend on the end, stick it into the hole in the seal, and pull it out thatway.
that picture to me looks like the banjo bolt copper gaskets are leaking tho... not sure as I can't see where the oil really is, but those gaskets look messed a bit.

Thanks MOB. Nothing is seemingly easy!

its all fun and games till someone gets their eye poked out...... or pokes a seal into the crankcase.. 8) 8)

I only give the cautions my friend, from in depth experiences...

its actually a painless 1 hour job... unless someone squeezes the clutch when the slave is disconnected from the engine...

I just replaced that seal yesterday on my bike, used a stubby phillips screwdriver to install the new one, slid the new one onto the screwdriver and tapped it in till the base of the screwdriver bottomed out on the case.

Experience talking?

no, actually averted by installing a wood block in place with a rubber band.... during a tech thingy where people kept prodding stuff....

Great job T Cro!  I'm ordering the seal and will replace it next week. I really appreciate your experience and sharing it.  I'll post how it turns out  :)
