Third wheelie good for a year in PRISON

More absurdity from The Peoples Republic Of Ill-inois.

Quinn signs anti-wheelie law
51 minutes ago  •  BY KURT ERICKSON, The Southern Springfield Bureau
Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Thursday designed to crack down on a popular motorcycle stunt.

Beginning Jan. 1, bikers could face tougher sanctions if they are caught doing wheelies.

A wheelie occurs when the front wheel of the motorcycle lifts off the pavement with a twist of the throttle and the bike is ridden on the rear wheel only.

The measure calls for an initial fine of $100. However, motorcyclists caught a second time could face up to six months in jail and a maximum fine of $1,500. Bikers nabbed for a third wheelie offense could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.

The new law is part of a package of new motorcycle safety provisions approved by the General Assembly this spring.

In addition to the tougher wheelie penalties, the law calls for motorcycle riders to keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times when the bike is in motion.

One hand on the bars at all times? That's crazy! I suppose that riding backwards is out too?

I wonder if they reworked the penalties for corrupt governors and legislatures?   :o

Not sure why this is an absurdity. Wheelie's in a controlled environment are exhilarating and a exhibition of skill, wheelie-ing on a public road, especially in traffic, endangers other people besides the rider, and retribution should be swift and severe...

Seems like that should be a higher priority, eh?  ::)

I think that what Gary means here is that Illinois has so many more important things to worry about that passing a trivial law like this is pretty ridiculous. Our governor needs to get his head out of his ass.

Its when you are accelerating over a bump or slight hill and the front comes up an inch or so and they write you a $1500 ticket that is questionable.

Won't debate that statement...   8)

Says the guy pictured doing a wheelie...  ;)

Seriously, how often do you do that? And how often have you been caught doing that? The odds of getting caught 3x in that situation are extremely slim, plus any decent judge would throw it out. I can say that the only time my front wheel left the ground was during a takeoff from a light while pissed off. I can also say, I'll never do it again.  :yikes:

Retribution? Really? For a damn wheelie? There's already laws on the books to cover reckless driving. Suspended license and fines, OK. Jail for driving on a suspended license, OK. But specifically jail time for a wheelie. That what's absurd.

So you probably think that caning is completely out of the question...  ;)

In all seriousness, the jail time is probably reserved for the third offense. If you're getting busted for the third time, you obviously didn't learn from the first two...
