Radar Detector Advice
« on: May 01, 2012, 07:33:39 AM »
I'm considering purchasing a radar detector for the C14.  I've never used one in a car or on a bike.  Any good tips or recommendations?

Thanks, Matt

Hardest part is getting the warning.  If you have an intercom, Make sure it has some kind of audio out.

You could get a unit like http://www.motorcycleradar.com/radar_screamer.htm  to boost the beep so you can hear it over wind noise.

Alternatively  you can wait for the new version of the H.A.R.D. system from Legal speeding that gives a visual light in your visor that alerts you to the signal.

As far as detectors go,  I like to get Front AND rear detection,  A radar detector out the front will not pick up a cop speeding up to catch up to you very well.    only a few systems that can do that,  But the valentine one is the easiest I would think, and they sell a remote mount screen and audio out units. BUT not waterproof.   Then you start getting into the remote mount systems $$$

I will personally get the V1 and mount it out on my Crash bars in a water proof opaque box(theft).  so it can see behind me nicely then get a remote mount screen on the fairing but again $$.

Nothing really protects you from Laser or instant on.  Check what the cops in your area use.

I can't "recommend" it, but I'm contemplating trying out a Cobra iRadar for ~$90.00. I know that Cobra products are usually mediocre (or crappy) compared to others, but the ability to interface with a smartphone is truly awesome. I always have my smartphone connected to the Bluetooth headset in my helmet. With the iRadar, alerts would interrupt the music and alert me of a problem. Also, it has a GPS features for speed traps, red light cameras and false positives. I think this is the future of radar detectors...

Matt,

I have the Escort 9500ix, pricey but better than most.
The built in GPS has red light camera information (which can be updated via a subscription) and you can "mark" speed traps etc with a press of a button (even with gloves on) when riding.

The comment about wiring is very true, but I use a direct wire system (available from Radar Busters) to hook it all up. The H.A.R.D has had interference problems on my 2009 C14 but I am still trying to sort this out, as the bike sometimes won't start with the system "On" before starting the bike.

Hope this helps..

Jon

Have the Escort 9500i on both the C-14 and new ZX14r, and will NEVER leave home without them!  Work perfect never miss an alert....easy to use, plug it into the Mix-It amplifier, then into my custom molded stereo earphones........the Zumo 550 is also wired up to the Mix-It and all 3 units work perfectly together.....never an issue...Have music, GPS, and Radar all coming into the earphones with no issues.

I think this is the future of radar detectors...

It is only the future if they support Android, which already has much more of the market than the Apple iphone...

Ooops, did a little research and answered my own question!  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cobra.iradar&hl=en

Yeah, that video review is pretty old. At the time, I don't think they had an Android application. Also, the Android application is a version behind the iPhone application, so it still lacks a few useful features. I believe they have a newer beta version that can be side-loaded though.

My only reservation is that I'm not a fan of Cobra radar detectors. That, and it doesn't offer detection features found in other radar detectors. I just hope other companies (i.e. Valentine, Escort, etc.) come out with something similar that interfaces with a smart phone.

Well, I will take your word for it.  I live in Virginia, the ONLY state in the ENTIRE COUNTRY that outlawed radar detectors.  (And yes, supposedly they have radar detector detectors).  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_detector_detector

If I detect your detector before you detect my detector detector will your detector detector detector still detect my detector?

Thanks for the advice.  I'll review them all.  Since I have the black C14 speed has been a constant "problem"...of course this has been discussed way too much already.

Well, it doesn't have anti-detection capabilities.

BTW, Virginia and Washington are the only states that completely outlaw detectors in the US, so far. I frequently travel into Washington, so this is a concern for me...

Whew, I thought you meant Washington State, I go across the bridge quite often and I would have been screwed. They are banned in Virginia and Washington DC. What do you care? You are from Oregon right? If that is a true statement, we (ZG, you, and I) should round up the black beauties and go for a ride. I may be getting you and BeaverMatt mixed up.

I did some research on the iRadar and found it does have some flaws but I am hoping they work those out in the iPhone app as time goes by. Well they better, cause at that price I pulled the trigger on the Cobra and a RAM Motorcycle Clutch & Brake Radar Detector Mount yesterday. More farkles to add to my quickly accruing list for this bike. I have the GLX bluetooth helmet with a Ram iPhone mount next to my cup holder so it only seemed logical to buy the iRadar  :D :D :D
