It's not how you break in the motor, it's the oil. You have to make sure you use the right type and even more important, the Brand of oil. ::)

I was wondering about this. When I pick up my bike I have to drive it back 5 1/2 hours on the highway.
You guys dont think that will hurt it right?
In case you didn't figure it out already, the other comments were by unemployed comedians.

Try to vary the speed and loading as much as possibly on the ride home.  5.5 hours at a constant rpm & load is not recommended for break-in.  It will get pretty old and monotonous, but by shifting up and down between the 3 top gears and varying your speed by 10-15mph, you s/b able to give the bike a decent break-in.   Probably wouldn't hurt to take a couple of breaks along the way.

I did an 1800 mile trip on mine right after I bought it....no problems so far at 46k.

I really never considered the break in period being for the RIDER....it makes a lot of sense. Think about this:(ya I know I'm talking about BMW.....again.) ,but if you go to most Beamer dealers they encourage you to take a test ride-using a floor bike. All these bikes will be sold with miles on them and they don't ride with you. That tells me that they don't care about break-in. I am sure of this because I gave them a lot of s^&t  about miles on KLTs I was looking at buying. Yea the "light truck"ain't a C-14 but it wasn't a dog and I can assure you many people whacked them.
So yea they are broke in.

I picked mine up about 1900 miles ago (1.5 months?)...first 20 miles, smoothly run it up...low gears, changing engine speed frequently (shifting on city streets a lot)..then "ride it like ya stole it!"  (As safely as possible, of course).

I agree with motoman's theory of the first 20 miles being the most important...and sealing the pistons by running it up after warm up.

Dino oil for the first 4000 miles with 3 oil changes, and then AMSOIL Synthetic every 9000 miles.

Just my $0.02...  :)

I dunno...been using it for 6 years and 3 bikes...I likes it.  Not saying it's better or worse than anything else, just that I like it.

(Please do not start a "best oil" thread-jack LOL! :)

There's a bunch of stuff in that engine other than rings that need to be broken-in. Gearbox is one that comes to mind.
