Eye r a Luddite
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:39:22 PM »
Found a good deal on a new color laser printer, plopped down a couple of bux for it. UPS guy stopped by today with a 'small' box. I thought it was an under-counter refrigerator, perhaps a narrow dishwasher, and just about as heavy.

Ripped the box apart, removed some orange transport tape, shook the toner cartridges, connected up the wires. All according to the one page "Installation Guide", which is the size of a IMax screen when fully unfolded.

Man, I been out of it. I though my HP 6MP was the cats meow. This new Xerox does 20+ pages a minute, in color, and on both sides. And it's even connected to the network with one of those spiffy 8 wire telephone cables!

Now what to do with my Okidata ML-180 (parallel port), the HP 232 color inkjet (parallel port), and the 6MP (parallel port, with 3 new unused genuine HP toner cartridges).

What?  Is that some sort of antique?  No wifi?   ;D

Heck, my inkjet has wifi.  And I can print to it from anywhere - literally anywhere that I have internet/email access.  (It has it's own email address)  Or from my smartphone.  (Yes, there's an Android app for that...)

Funny...we have a printer hooked up to the device that was supposed to do away with paper...what happened?

Actually... My home network is a domain model, as I test mods to this forum on my local server before trying them live. I do have wi-fi, for my netbook, but the netbook is on a different domain (WORKSTATION). And I just installed the new printer to the netbook :) Security cretin I am, I turned off most of the spiffy features on the printer. Up here, in the middle of effin nowhere, there's a ton of Lumberjacks driving around with a Pringles can stuck out the window ;)

Colour inkjet as my main printer, dot matrix backup.

I still have a Royal daisy wheel typewriter in the basement. At the time, I sprung a pile of dough for a Centronics interface card for it. Boy it sure printed nice, but additional font wheels were big bux, and so were film ribbons. Now that I think about it, I still have an "A-B" push button parallel switch so I could switch between the Royal and the Okidata dot matrix. Think I still have an ink ribbon for that too.

I need to clean house :-/

Canon inkjet printer shared by the wife and myself. I just installed a K-Sun label / heat shrink tubing printer, to try it out.

My name is Dave and I'm a Luddite. No cell phone, no cable TV, no pager, no internet at house, no facialbook, no myspace, no youtube postings, no video games, owned or played, rotary telephones at home, manaul tansmissions in cars, no electric windows or locks in cars, no push button cars keys, no home delivered newspaper, and finally, a 2001 Concours that I plan on owning a long time.

Strawboss, you may not have a list of things that a foolish society has deemed as necissary, but you do have the fruits of finacial responsibilty. You have a healthy relationship with a fine woman, time and ability to go places and experience life.  You get to enjoy some meals of good, solid East European cooking, plus you ride the cleanest Blue Concours in the whole USA.   I am calculating the scores and it looks like you have won!
Yep, still riding the old one

OH Leo, now stop, surely you jest! Thanks but I know I'm not the only one here that does the things I do or enjoy. Everything I have and do was/is available to everyone in this country. All that plus the gift of COG we all enjoy and the opportunity to know folks like you. BTW, we just got a BIG screen digital TV, its big, a whole 19 inches! Its got this thing with buttons that controls its functions ;D. We don't watch much TV.

I'm just going to say this...  I'm a 17 year old sophomore in college and you old farts are more technically advanced than I am when it comes to electronic gizmos...

This makes no sense.
Past: XR650R, 250 Ninjette.
Present: None...
Next: C-14, '08-09 Speed Triple, and/or Sprint GT.

Gizmo...either that's a pretty high falutin' word or you have been learning some salty language in school....
