I've heard they are independent stories, with different characters.
There was a fourth book in the works when the author died.

There are three stories but they all have the same plot..Lisbeth gets accused of murder, Michael tries to save her...the walk in the park with the dirty politician, civil servant, policeman to get the real story.  Michael sticks it to the real bad guy...Lisbeth goes free.

More or less

The plot kind of lost it's steam by the thrid movie but they were all edge of the seat murder mysteries.
