News laws for 2012
« on: December 30, 2011, 10:13:27 AM »
Here's a good one for us motorcyclist in Illinois.

Motorcycle Red Lights (HB 2860/PA 97-0627):

Allows motorcyclists stopped at a red light to proceed through the light if, after waiting a reasonable length of time, the red light fails to change to green. Governor Quinn issued an amendatory veto to change the language of the measure, however both the House and Senate overrode his changes and the bill became law as originally passed.

I've had to avoid some intersections in my area because of this but now I won't have to.

I think they say 120 seconds. I'll keep a copy of the law on the bike til LEO gets used to it.

I think allowing responsible citizens to be armed is much more important. ::)

What's a reasonable length of time?

I'd say the amount of time it takes me to make sure that there are no cars coming.

Or no cops around.

Also rear seat passenger seat belt law.

There's also a new Murder Registry. It'll soon be easier to have a non-offender registry. It might be a shorter list.

We have this law in Minnesota, and thats about all I do. Complete stop, look twice, then go.
Haven't gotten tagged yet. I think in 120 seconds I could just take 3 rights like an UPS driver. Or put the kickstand down and walk over to push the crosswalk button.
I think the wording is kept deliberately vague so the LEOs can make conditions-based judgment calls.

Vague is the operable word here...

Here is the language:

3.5. After stopping as required by paragraph 1 or 2 of this subsection, the driver of a motorcycle or bicycle, facing a steady red signal which fails to change to a green signal within a reasonable period of time because of a signal malfunction or because the signal has failed to detect the arrival of the motorcycle or bicycle due to the vehicle's size or weight, shall have the right to proceed subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign as required by Section 11-1204 of this Code.

Everyday I was doing this this year. It is legal now? You can tell if the light is going to change for you or not. It is the early mornings that I have to run them. In the afternoon I let the car behind me trigger the light.
