State hopes to break car owners' habit of changing oil too often

Well, this should make for an interesting oil thread.   ;D

The C10 manual for my 2006 specifies 6000 miles for oil/filter changes.  My wife's Saturn and my Chevy truck both have lights that tell me when to change.  My previous 1996 Pontiac Sunfire recommended 7500 miles.  (And was running strong at 247,000 miles getting 32+ MPG)

:rotflmao:  Just went to California's website, http://www.checkyournumber.org to check when my vehicle should have an oil change.  My 2002 Trailblazer comes back at 3000 miles.   :rotflmao:  So does my wife's Saturn.   :rotflmao:  My daughter's 2003 Sunfire, which the manual said 7500 miles, also comes back as 3000.   :o  Great site, California...

I've always done 5-6000 miles, or twice a year, on all of the vehicles. Usually changed for the winter and summer. I also use Mobil1 in everything.

They probably asked Jiffy Lube. They will ALWAYS say 3000 miles.

Never mind I just read the article. The owners manual on my Nissan Titan says 3750 but the site says 7500. My 08 Highlander OM says 3750 also but the site says 5000. So where are they getting their numbers?

Auto service departments LOVE to see you change your oil at 3,000 miles . More money in the till. That's where most money is made at auto dealers.

Answer me this if someone can...  Has anyone bought a car with lifetime oil changes?  If so, how does it work?  Do they follow the manufacturer's recommendations or do they change it say every 3k miles if the recommendation is 5k?

oil threads rule.

does the site address address "extreme conditions" such as off-roading in the dusty 115 degree desert?

In addition to the questionable data already listed, I found that it had:  No listings for pre-2000 vehicles; my wife's 2008 GMC Acadia isn't listed, oh wait, they must think it's an Arcadia; and shouldn't there be a difference between conventional and synthetic oil change intervals.

A vehicle owner has experience of maybe 50 oil changes in a lifetime.
Auto dealer has the experience of 1000s of oil changes every year, but makes a profit from each one.
Auto manufacturer has tested that motor to destruction over 100,000s of miles and they KNOW what that motor needs in terms of oil changes.

So are you going to believe someone who claims they know what they are recommending, someone who makes a profit from it, or someone who has researched and tested and built that motor?
So, I follow the Manufacturers recommendations and my oil has yet to let me down.

C14 gets 8,000 mile changes with filter. (@48,000)
C10 gets 5,000 mile changes (easier to remember than 6,000). (@170,000)
Car gets 10,000 mile changes (1998 Acura RL, @135,000)
Both bikes get cheap semi-synth 10W40 which exceeds Mfgr recommendations.
Car gets cheap semi-synth 5W30 which exceeds Mfgr recommendations.

Nah.  I'm going to listen to the state of California, and avoid those unnecessary 3000 mile oil changes by going with their recommendation of 3000 mile oil changes.   :rotflmao:

Because of my driving habits, my truck tells me to change the oil around 7500 miles.  (I never really check, as I'm terrible about keeping records - I just do it when the light tells me to.)

I'm an Ogre.

I change the oil one a year, every 10K, same time I do the valves.
