Okay, didn't come out completely correct as I know that it adjusts automatically, but since I have had the bike (2 years about 25,00 mile) I have never heard what I believe to be cam chain noise so I don't know.
If you are fortunate and the tolerance stacking along with the cam chain wear works right you may never have to mess with it. But if they don't, you may eventually have cam drive rattle and buzzing.
If so, the easiest way to be sure that you have proper adjustment and function is to go with a manual tensioner. I had two of the OEM ("new improved style" for Concours I guess)ratchet tensioners in my KLX in less than 14,000 miles, after which it got a top end rebuild due to the chains being worn and the valves hosing up. Over 30,000 miles with only 4 adjustments (3 in the first roughly 15,000 miles as the chains seated in) during those 30,000 miles. A breeze to install and to adjust if one can read and follow simple instructions.
But until you actually hear cam drive noise, don't worry about it. Even when the tensioner does start to fail it isn't catastrophic. You have several hundred miles before it actually starts to get really bad.
With my experience though, I don't trust any of the Kaw tensioners after the first failure. It damages the rack teeth and the pawl. And there is no short cut to "aid" the tensioner in adjusting, like sticking some tool in and hammering it forward or loosening mount bolts until i clicks. Both are sure methods to overtighten the cam drive and to risk accelerated cam drive wear and even pull the cams into contact with the plain bearing surfaces in the head.
