Trunk top rack needed
« on: October 20, 2011, 06:08:30 AM »
I have this Givi rear trunk:

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-e36-economy-monokey-luggage-case

I'd like to add a rack like this to it added to my tail trunk:

http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-e81-metal-luggage-rack

Anyone know of a rack that will fit, and work with, my tail trunk?

I bought it used at a swap meet, but I think I have that exact rack.  I mounted it to the top of a JCW trunk, you just need to move it around until you find the right spot for the four legs to sit nice.  It will require drilling four holes in the lid.  I now have one trunk without the rack that stays on the bike most of the time, and a second for when I plan on a trip.  Keep in mind that the rack can encourge you to overload the bracket/mount that holds the trunk on.  If you don't have a tank bag, maybe get one first for better weight distribution.

Good points.  I do use a tank bag.  There are times when the wife and I are on a trip and need to jetison parts of our riding suits and I was thinking I could bungee the items to the rack.   Riding suits take up a lot of space.

I have the Givi E460 trunk box with that same metal top rack, which I swap back and forth between the Connie and the Wee Strom.  I also have a set of E36's which I use as side cases for the 'Strom.  The plastic of the E460 is much thicker than that of the E36.  There is a lot of stress on the top rack when underway at highway speeds.  I put large area washers under the lid of my E460 to help spread the load, although I really don't put much weight on that rack.  So far so good.  Unless someone has tried it and had good results over time, I think I'd be a little concerned about the lid of the E36 taking the strain in the long run.  It might start cracking at the bolt holes.  That may be why Givi doesn't show the rack as an accessory for that box.  But I may be wrong.

Yes, you're probably correct about the plastic not being able to handle much stress.  Givi would probably sell a rack for it if it could take the stress.

Maybe an aluminum plate or another layer of thick plastic under the lid would help.  Or, it might be fine, just something to think about.

I wonder if the JCW rack is a bit large.  Wish it came in black, not chrome.

I just sold my Goldwing to a friend and he has removed this rack to install a
spoiler. I could ask if he wanted to sell it, and you could always paint it black or have it powder coated. Let me know and I will ask him. If they are not going to use it I could box it up and let you try it to see if it fits.

If it's not too much $$ I'd try it.  I did notice that my Givi trunk has four drill spots on top, like it's made for a rack.  The 4 holes measure 10.5" wide x 8.75" deep.

I have a givi e45 trunk, and givi makes a rack for it. In fact I have one on my trunk.   It's just a plastic plate with legs and little holes to hook stuff to but it works great.  Part number is e70.
