Steve is right on. I was doing some work looking for an oil leak and let the bike idle for some long periods as well as rev it some to try and find the leak. I was surprised when I went to fuel it up. Went from 40's to 32!

I am planning on taking a multiple tank trip here this weekend, but I still think I am getting poor mileage on the long trips too.  My last 1000+ mile trip I averaged no better then 35.  Steve, Do I need to balance the carbs after getting them back from you, or can you do that on the bench?

I get close, but they need to be done while running on the bike to be correct. Don't just look at the carbs for mileage issue, there's alot of other factors that come into play also. And honestly, some bikes get better mileage than others right from the beginning. 2fast has an 86 that runs GREAT, but he says it's always gotten around 35 mpg regardless of what he does to it. That 2 block trip will kill your economy. you're getting what i would expect, based on what I've heard from others who do short trips and stoplight to stoplight riding. Any time the bike is idling , it's sucking fuel but not moving.  It's getting 0 mpg.
I just came back from a trip to Barber Motorsports. My worst tank of fuel was when we were doing the trip from camp to barber, banging on the backroads, then sitting idleing in a long line waiting to get in. I remarked to Stevej that the idling was going to kill our mileage. He gave me a confused look. Most folks don't realise that warmup time and idling kill economy. Go for a real ride, run a few tank over tank fills, you'll see the mileage steadily increase - the engine is warm and functioning in it's most economical state. Steve

I have an 05 with K&N pods.  When I ride it the "correct" way I get 44-45, I commute 60 miles one way to work 4 days a week.  When I ride it the way I really enjoy the mileage drops to 38-39, but is so much more fun.

Got to brag about my mileage. Took a 600 mile round trip this weekend and on the first leg I got my best mileage ever. Two up, bags, top box, luggage. 52.3 mpg On the  return leg we filled up with 10% ethanol and saw a 10% drop in MPG to 46. We make the same trip twice a year and get between 46 and 50.

I always got aroung 38 to 40 average per tankful, I put on TCros stick coils with new platinum plugs gapped to .050" and synched the carbs and have averaged 45.2 over the last ten tankfuls. Idles smoother and starts quicker too.
