helmet help
« on: August 29, 2011, 02:26:04 PM »
since summer is just about over I won't worry about it right now unless I see a good sale..  but I would like to find a helmet with ""max air flow"" (vents)  currently have a modular with small vents on the chin and forehead but the air flow is almost nothing. I cooked this year and don't want to go throught that next year. would like to keep it in the mid range area in price.  suggestions?

I have not tried too many, but I was using an Shoei RF1000 and it did not seem to pass much air
I replaced it with a Shoei RF1100 and was so surprised with it over the 1000 in air flow and quiet and fit that I bought a second one.
very happy now

The best helmets I've tried so far, in order:

Shoei Qwest
Shoei RF-1100
Bell RS-1
Bell Star

Focus on a helmet with a good venturi effect as it will vent better than a helmet without one. My face vent does very little because the windshield blocks most of the air.

The best helmet for venting that I have owned by far is the Shoei X-12.  Unfortunately this race quality helmet is a bit on the pricey side.

I've stuck with the Shoei RF line for years.  They're tough to beat.

Oddly the best flowing helmet I ever had was a Scorpion..  The Exo900 and the Transformer both flowed like mad...(but were a tad on the heavy side)

I have a Shoei Multitec now and i prob will go back to a Scorpion when it's time for a new lid as this thing doesn't flow for crap... :(

Arai RX-Q best I've had for ventilation. Fits is a bit on the snug side when compared to my Shoei's(RF100/Multitec) but prefer it, esp on longer rides.

Gmax 68S. Something like 19 vents total. You can FEEL the breeze through these things.

Very good helmet, reasonably priced. Made in South Korea.

I have a 68s as well. It flows a lot of air which is what I was after when I bought it a couple years ago, but it's noisy as all get out.

+3 for the X12.  Also consider a white helmet, makes a differance and it adds to visibilty!  I've had a couple Scorpions, problems with them is they have all leaked on me, something us PNW riders are concerned with.

The Bell Star moves a TON of air even at around town speeds.  Very stable at speed and doing headchecks...I love my Star.  There were a bunch of closeouts on the 2009 helmets (Snell 2005) when Bell did a mild re-do of the Star for 2010 Snell certification.  You can still find a few of them around...though not as cheap as they were in late 2009.

I almost forgot to mention that the Star runs a little big.

The Bell Vortex works quite well on the venting side, but it is a bit noisy. I wear ear plugs, so not an issue for me.
