brake bleeding/flushing question.
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:41:03 AM »
I'm about to do a flush and fill on both brakes and the clutch for the first time. I have Fred's DVDs and it looks simple enough, even for me. The question that I have is about the rear brake. In Fred's videos he doesn't mention the second bleed point at all on the rear caliper, the one on the inside.

Does anyone know if it matters in what order I bleed the rear caliper?

I asked Fred this question but got no reply.

I do the one closest to the wheel first.  Don't know if that's right or wrong, Conrad.  I haven't had any issues doing it that way.

Not having done it I'm no expert but I'd bleed the lowest first if there is a difference.

I don't think so, especially since you are not really going to bleed the system, only change the fluid. If there is no air in the system then it does not really matter which side is done first or last.

Just a suggestion but do yourself a gigantic favor and don't allow the master cylinder to suck any air. The C-14 is the worst vehicle I have ever seen regarding priming and purging the hydraulic systems. Just pushing fluid through the system is no problem but I have found it very difficult trying to force air out of any of the systems.

I don't think it matters,Conrad. I double what Brian have said about not allowing the master cylinder to suck any air, pump it two or three times and top it up! Get one of those MotionPro one way bleader valves.....they really make this job effortless.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I spoke too soon about Fred not replying, his suggestion was to start with the inboard bleeder first.

As Pink suggested I thought it made more sense to do the lower bleeder first, whichever that one is. I'd have to walk out to the bike to see.

Then again as Brian said, I'm just pushing fluid through the system, as I don't have any air in the lines, so it doesn't really matter does it?

Got it, two pumps and top 'er off.

Koval, I did order a MotionPro bleeder valve, it should be here tomorrow today, it's been delivered.

I installed speed bleeder valves on mine. Was well worth the ~$20.00.

What bleeder valve did you order? Looking at MotionPro site and I'm not sure.

Per URL

If the caliper has two bleed screws, start at the inboard bleeder first

For calipers with 2 bleeders, repeat this process for the outboard bleeder

Well there you go, the consensus is to do the inboard bleeder first. Thy will be done.

You could bleed them with be bike on the side stand to have one lower than the other ... and / or ... buy 2 motion pro bleeders and do bleed both screws at the same time.

My guess is as long as you are careful almost any method will provide acceptable results ...

Are you going to use synthetic brake fluid now that you've broken in the system on regular brake fluid? If you use synthetic, do you expect to get more miles out of the brakes? Will the brakes run cooler? I've heard that if you use synthetic brake fluid you can extend the intervals between braking. How long do you plan on going in- between stops with the new brake fluid? Can you do a stoppie with synthetic brake fluid?

No, Synthetic wont' work in the braking system, you have to use Vegtable oil!! :)

So many questions! I plan on using synthetic brake fluid and never having to stop at all. I'll slow down a bit (maybe) while my wife runs alongside the bike with a large gas can when it's time to fill 'er up.
