C14 Valve Adjust Write Up or Video
« on: November 16, 2016, 09:08:12 AM »
Hi all.  Need to do this for the first time over Thanksgiving break.  Will get kit from Murphs.  I cannot find a write up or video.  If anyone can guide me to one I would appreciate it.  Cannot buy videos.

I do have the manual downloaded - but always seem to do these things better from reading others' accounts.

My skill - have done valves on smaller engines and the C10.  I believe this will be more extensive and probably stretch the top of my abilities - so trying to gather as much info as possible.

Thanks

I haven't seen any good writeups or free videos for valve adjustment procedures, although there are lots of threads on here about when to or not to do it, tips, etc.  As for the actual procedure, most people rely on the factory manual and/or the Angel Ride videos.  I can't offer much advice about the procedure itself, since I haven't done it before (although I hope to within the next 6 months with copious help from my friend who is a mechanic).

I don't know what you mean by "cannot buy videos".  You want them but "can't" buy them?  Are you asking for someone to illegally supply you copies of something like these:  http://www.angelridevideos.com/concours.html ?

If by "manual" you mean the owner's manual, that doesn't have procedures for valve adjustments.  Although it is freely downloadable.

If by "manual" you mean the factory manual, you broke the law by "downloading" it because it is copyrighted.  The manual can be purchased from a Kawasaki parts dealer (in person or online sales) but, unfortunately, no legal "downloadable" version exists.

It's too bad Haroldo's write up got lost in the crash..  Although, if I remember correctly, it would actually scare someone from doing it themselves.

Rook's tutorial for th ZX-14 from the ZX14NinjaForum site is both quite good and quite applicable.  The procedure is virtually identical:

Easy maxtog.  Relax there.  I do have the factory manual that I bought.  It is the electronic version, not the book.  Secondly,  there is a thing called YouTube.  There are free videos on it. You can learn to do many things on it.  It does not mean stolen.  Easy on the assumptions please.  Turns out there is a great write up on a ninja sight.  Glad I asked.

Would love more information about that, because I am not aware of a way to legally acquire an electronic version of the factory manual (and that would be useful for many).

That is good news.  The procedure for the ZX14 should be the same, except of course for all the plastics and the location of some of the accessories and such.  That combined with the factory manual will probably do fine.

Rest assured I am already scared without even seeing that writeup  :)

PDF version off ebay. Search function is great.  Flipping "pages" with greasy fingers on a touch pad not so great.

That is an illegal ("pirated") copy, just so you know.  They broke the law by offering it, you broke it by receiving it.  If I remember correctly, the PDF version is a dealer-only document that can't be sold, given, or copied to the public in any way.  (Of course, if you actually buy/pay for a legit paper copy from a dealer and then happen to also obtain the PDF version, it probably isn't morally wrong, even though it is still illegal).  This is why I said it is "unfortunate".

Meanwhile, Nissan, on the other hand, sold me a completely unprotected, reasonably priced, electronic PDF of the factory manual for my G37S.  Go figure.

So if I am reading your post correctly, the moral of the story is that KiPass sucks, right?

Well, some people seem to squeeze that conclusion out of just about anything, but in this case, no!!

Brian, trying to use humor to lighten up a thread beginning to go sideways will not be tolerated.

I thought the Hero designation was reserved for members who actually survived the valve adjustment war?  ;D

No, it's merely a designation for the number of posts you've written.  Many of us have not and will not do a valve adjustment.  I remember Haroldo and wouldn't touch a valve adjustment check with a 10 foot pole held by another.

Fred Harmon has it on video as well as other subjects and one can get them here:  http://www.angelridevideos.com/  They are excellent entertainment.

Never had the pleasure of being shaken to the core by the esteemed Haroldo. Between the Harmon videos and MoB's insights on this forum,  I did pretty good at the valve check and adjustment.  :)
