Downed utility pole closes I-94 near College Ave. for (about 5) hours

By Sharif Durhams and Breann Schossow of the Journal Sentinel

July 5, 2011

I-94 near W. College Ave. was closed for about five hours Tuesday after a downed utility pole sent wires across the freeway, according to the Milwaukee County sheriff's office.

Deputies closed the freeway in both directions from about 1:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Barry McNulty, a We Energies spokesman, said a dump truck clipped a cable television line in the area, bringing down a utility pole. It also brought down electrical wires attached to the pole.

About 1,000 We Energies customers lost electrical power because of the accident, but service was restored for most of the customers by the time the freeway was reopened, McNulty said.

Repairs were delayed because the work crews had trouble getting through the traffic congestion created by the accident, McNulty said.

To keep the service interruption for the remaining customers affected to a minimum, technicians chose to replace the pole rather than to cut and restring new wires, McNulty said.

Crews also had to inspect the area to make sure no other poles or equipment were damaged, he said.

Northbound I-94 traffic was redirected off the interstate at College Ave. while the freeway segment was closed. Southbound traffic was diverted to westbound I-894.

So can you guess who was inside the Northbound traffic at 5pm needed going just two miles further?  Me!  Idling ATGATT in 95 degree weather burned a bunch of fuel.  I mean I had a mesh jacket on but still.  Was running on fumes because I thought I'd be off in plenty of time to get gas near home.

I do not envy Texas summer commuters who do heat for a living...

PS.  AND, there was a pickup truck on fire in the morning that I passed on I-94 during my morning commute.  Had to sweep away from the right lane quickly as traffic slowed to watch.  Darn gapers' block![

So what I did for my Connie was fill up her tank and take her to the Milwaukee Brewers' baseball game that night.  Motorcycle parking down in front is really nice./font]

Well I didn't do it today, but finally got the pictures downloaded.

Homemade heat shields and Snarf's highway pegs.

Sliced the windscreen and tinted it again and install edge trim.

Stock with lip.

Chopped with peak and edge trim.

and the end result. chopped to 13 inches peak gone, tinted and edging installed. I really like it like this.

That looks cool.  I like it better with the peak gone.  I think i'll cut mine the same.

- Rode her and the wife to the 'Kansas' concert at Summerfest last night.  I mean, took the wife and rode the bike.  :)  Nice to have free festival parking thanks to Harley-Davidson.  I know, I know, I should have pics of the bike lot.  I did take a picture of the band playing from a cell phone video.  Nice playset with old favorites and new songs.
And the bike ran fine too.

Got naked, and built highway pegs.
Real men have tire irons, and use them.

Went out to Lowe's today and got some grade 8 stainless screws and aluminium nuts to finally tighten up my continuously rattling front fender. Never going to put rivets in there again!

I have been looking for that rattle for a while, thanks for the post!

I definitely recommend getting the bladed screws and wave washers. Also do be sure to put some threadlocker on the nuts to keep everything tight. This was one of the easiest fixes I've done yet and well worth it.

The recall for the rear brake pedal stone guard was completed. Shop did it in 7 minutes start to finish. Great service from Sout Valley Motorsports in Draper, UT. Damn good shop.

Now, I can stop screaming every-time I see a stone on the side of the road.

Is it just me, or have we all had an ass-full of the silly recalls?

Maybe if we are lucky it will be the last recall. One thing I noticed is the service manual does not show the stone guards and, if you try to adjust the rear brake pedal height after the stone guard recall, it became much more a pain than before .... Well it wasn't today but last Sunday I changed the oil using Mobile 1. Had about 6800 miles on it.

Replaced the final drive oil. I had replaced it 12K miles ago. The old oil was damn near black.  I didnt think it would be that dirty.  Old oil and new oil the same 80-90W. Anyone have similar experience with final drive oil with that amount of use. There are no leaks but did have rear tire replaced couple of months ago.

- Going to tackle the Fuel Gauge Mod with a Radio Shack 220ohm resistor tomorrow!

- Handled the fuel gauge resistor mod.  See my work here:

- Rode the cycle to the Brewers' game Saturday night.  Son-in-law could not use tickets so we had free seats because we fixed his mailbox.

- Rode out to Dousman, WI to visit Coffee Vault Cafe on Sunday morning.  Went south through Kettle Moraine via Hwy 67 to Elkhorn and back home again.  Watched the gas gauge work slower toward 'Empty'.

Nice little writeup up the two things I want to tackle next, fuel gauge resistor and adding a power outlet.  Thanks, Manworkinghere.

Drained, flushed and refilled the front brake lines. Here's what the old crud looked like. I don't think the PO did much maintenance at all. What surprised me is that there is "only" 20,000 miles.
