When is a tire worn out or how worn is this tire?

Michelin road pilot 2  Ok it's not new.

 It was on the bike when I bought it so I don't know how many miles are on it but how many are left, any???  I'm a touch gunshy after I blew a rear at 70 between trucks on the freeway on my shadow a couple of years ago.  My fault but the tire was well hidden by bags and flaps, had a flat spot that went through the cords, tube bulged out through the hole.

These tires don't really have wear bars like older street tires or am I blind?

You have a few more miles. I think I'd change it soon. Be careful in the wet. Here is a comparison I pulled off the net....

Yes, the PR2's have wear bars.  It looks worn from the photo to me.

Wear bars are 2mm deep.  I am not particularly gunshy, but would toss that rear tire directly. 

I ride lots of miles, and so try to get every mile out of them...but you also have no idea about the history of that PR2.  Get a fresh one on there and have one less thing to worry about already!

Look along the tread/water channels about 1" from the center end of those tread grooves.  I see at least one little TWI bar there.

Big picture, tires are cheap. Accidents and service calls are not. If you're just putting around town, run it a bit longer. If you are going on a trip, replace it.

Yeah Thanks all, I'll start shopping, I'll try to wear it out, change it out before I road trip it.  Gotta go look again, I think the front is PR3   hmm 50 / 55, anybody have an opinion on THAT??    ;D

Anyone tried the Shinkos? I have used them on my XS650's and just put a set on the Roadstar..

It's still holding air isn't it? No cords showing? Good to go!

Seriously, one (or more) wear bar is showing, look for the triangles on the sidewall that point to where the wear bar is.

Last 10% of tire life goes *much* quicker than the first 10%.

+1  I've literally seen them wear before my eyes when they get that low.  If you are nervous about it, get another tire.

Don't overlook the Bridgestone T30GT if you are looking to save some money on tires!  I went from PR4GT to the T30's earlier this month.  So far I like the T30's better than the PR4's and saved about $145.

From that photo I would say yes.  Did you inspect the entire tire?  I had a PR3 wear on one area of the tire much more than 180 degrees out from there.

Also, since I didn't see it mentioned, the risk of a puncture increases as the tire wears. 

Like Deziner said, it depends on where you are riding and how fast.
