yes it could be. If the shock is leaking, throw it away. It is not repairable.

Possible.
Could also be the vent tube off the top of the transmission has popped off the air cleaner body. Engine blow by is collecting on the shock and dripping down. Look for crud on the forward end of the swingarm, and/or the aft end of the engine.

Like the guy from "Tropical Welch" sez, the shock is not reparable.

Thanks again, thoroughly cleaned the dog bone area and took the bike for a ride. It was cold! will check the area again and post my findings. The motor only has 10K and looks like you could eat off of it. I guess time will tell. Thanks Kev.

The stock rear shock on my 87 was leaking oil, oh, 3 years ago.  I pulled the shock off and removed the rubber accordion boot.

What I saw were some minor scars/scratches in the shaft caused by something that must of been lodged in the seal.

I wiped the seals (insert a seal wiper between the shaft and seal and rotate it around the shaft/piston)

I then took some 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and wet sanded the scratches till they were all but gone.  Shock hasn't leaked in 3 years.  Probably only 5000 miles on it though because I bought a newer bike and don't ride the 87 much these days.

I sanded in a cross hatch pattern. Would have probably followed up with some finer sandpaper but didn't have any on hand and the 600 seemed like it might be fine enough.

Me. I lived north of Highway 61 near the Church at 61 and the Welch Cut Off for about 18 years. Pretty much raised five kids there.

OK.  My neighbor has family in Welch.  Some connection to the ice cream shop there.  A frequent stop for us when passing through.  That has to be one of my favorite areas in SE MN.
I am a Minnesota transplant... Came out of NW Wisconsin 12 years ago.  I miss the big lake and big woods, but not a lot of decent jobs up there.  Maybe someday we will go back.

Back to the original topic....
Last spring my rear C10 (2001) shock gave out.  The year before it had a slow air leak so installed a 12V airpump to easily fill it.  The leak got so bad that every 30 minutes I had to pump it back up.
I ended up ordering a Progressive 465 HD.  Best move I could have made.  At least until 2 months later when I sold the C10 & bought a new in the crate 2012 C14.

+1 on the Progressive shock. Replaced my OEM with the Progressive over 10 yrs  and 60,000 miles ago. Dampening starting to get a little weak but still better than the original.
