Muffler Down
« on: November 06, 2013, 03:04:41 AM »
I would like to apologise to anyone driving on the M25 last week.

I had been lane-splitting for too many miles when Otto started sounding loud and rough.
I thought it sounded like an exhaust stud had snapped but there was no loss of power so I just kept going.
I was dark and raining and I just wanted to go home.
A bit later it got quite a bit louder at which point I assumed that the 2nd stud had snapped.
Rode home with no problems and I now kind of understand the HD "loud pipes" brigade.
Car drivers really do notice you more although some of their gestures led me to believe that they were less than pleased at being distracted from texting/gambling/surfing porn on their phones.

Anyway, on arriving home I had a look through the fairing with a flash-light and all the studs and clamps were there.
I then looked to the rear of the bike and thought "Where the **** is my muffler?"
The answer was somewhere between J2 and the Dartford tunnel anti-clockwise on the M25.
Looks like the bolt attaching it to the foot-peg carrier either snapped or vibrated loose.
The rust around the clamp obviously gave way and off it went leaving the clamp holding some rust to the stainless tube.
I had a spare pair of mufflers so fitted those. The other muffler was also well rotted (disintegrated when I removed it).
Used Nylock nuts this time.

And the moral of the story?
The C10 sounds great on full throttle in a big tunnel (Dartford crossing) with the muffler missing. <LOL>
Oh, and I suppose you need to check the bolts attaching your mufflers once every few years or so. ;-)

Nylock nuts will melt the nylock out if used on exhaust.  I used some to add a longer deflector to my deflector (snowmobile exhaust outlet) and they melted, even though the nuts were not on the actual exhaust pipe and not in the full flow of the outgoing exhaust.

I would've thought you'd hear it if the muffler fell off.  Maybe too much other road noise prevented that.

Boomer is not a short man so his ears could be at least 12ft from the open pipe

By the way Boomer I didn't know you spoke English (US) what about a silencer ?? lol

Did you only use 2nd gear through the Dartford tunnel ??? lol

Years ago I used Nyloc nuts on the clamps that hold the exhaust pipes onto the head of my CB750. Never melted. Depending on the type of Nylon used the melting point is 220 - 265 degrees celcius.

Calm down,....<LOL> the Nylock is on the bolt that holds the muffler (silencer, can) to the footpeg bracket.
No way will the nylon melt there. Far too much metal to act as a heatsink.

I did hear it,... like I said "loud & rough" and later on "louder"
I thought it was a header that had come loose from the head but was in heavy traffic and no way do I want to stop there unless I absolutely have to.

Charlie, yes I speak fluent 'Mercan as well as Francais and can get by in Deutsch, Nederlands/Vlaams, and Svensk.
And yes, 2nd & 3rd on full throttle. <******* AWESOME!>

The 'cans' / 'silencers' / 'mufflers' (if you must ;D) seem to rot out pretty quickly on these GTRs - the NETAs on my newly purchased A5 aren't in perfect condition, but at least replacements are available ( which is more than can be said for my 900R  :( ).

The N-etas are mild steel and rot like crazy.
The newer Motad silencers are stainless but are £320 the pair.

As for GPZ900R silencers, what's wrong with the Marvings?

Thanks for the info Boomer - as I'm planning on keeping this bike for a while, I'll check them out  :)

Well spotted - To be fair the Marvings are still available and are a viable option...... but they are probably the only silencers currently being offered.

The Wrap on the N-Eta is stainless but all the important bits are rust-in-waiting.
That said, the N-Etas I had on Sanji were superb. The baffles rotted through first and they sounded great.
One day I pulled up to my local MOT station and the tester stood there with his fingers in his ears and after I switched her off he said 1 word.
"FAILED!"
He did let me get away with it for 4 years. <LOL>
