Holy smokes...poor gas mileage?
« on: March 29, 2013, 05:44:30 PM »
This thing gets terrible mileage. Ran out at 187. That's a little over 31 mpg

It is a powerful 1.4 liter engine and a rather large/heavy bike.  Many factors will affect mileage (and there are many existing threads on this topic).

I, and most people, seem to get in the low to mid 40's (like 42 or 44) miles per gallon with mostly highway miles.  City driving will lower that considerably.  Lots of spirited driving will also lower it.  31 seems pretty low, but is completely possible with insanely spirited driving with little or no highway miles.

Mine has been right at 32mpg for nearly every fill-up. It may have been up around 35mpg before I did the full exhaust and PCV. I don't think I am all that aggressive but it is difficult to not whack on it once or twice each time out. I put few highway miles on mine, mostly just short trips on back roads.

For the people who are getting "crappy" gas mileage, are you riding the the eco mode on or off?  When I ride the 80 freeway miles to work with the eco on I generally get in the 40's.  That's with me, 165 pounds, and my backpack that weighs another 25.  When I first brought the bike home I had a 150 mile ride and I got close to 50.  Of course I was babying it so I could break my engine in.  I've always seem to have gotten good gas mileage no matter what I ride.  My 2008 1000rr got in the high 40's to 50 and my friends who rode r1's couldn't believe it.  Of course I don't ride like an a-hole like they do.  I just put the gipro/atre on my connie the other day so I'm sure the gas mileage will go down a little from the excitement of more lower end power.  I'm still debating about putting a full exhaust because I don't want sub 40 mpg, but I saw someone else on the forum that had the areap full exhaust with pcv and was still getting +40mpg.

My friend who has a 2010 C14 asked me that too.  Of course I am not, it's a 2012 and I am enjoying the new bike, not in an MPG contest. Ok, lesson learned.

Don't rely on the trip computer to tell you what mileage you are getting. I've found it to over estimate by 4-7 mpg. I've gotten as low as 28.5mpg(my calculation) when the bike was claiming 35.8mpg and as high as 47.2mpg(my calculation) and the trip computer claimed 51.9 that time. 2011 C-14 stock using ECO mode most of that

Mine is an '08 so no Eco Mode. Average since I've owned it is 35.6mpg and the best for a tank was 46.1mpg. I'd do better is it wasn't so much fun to use the right hand  8)

Can't feel good about the mileage the bike gets compared to the car 'cause my little old '03 Honda Insight has averaged 69mpg for 140,000mi.
If it can't be fixed with a hammer you can sure as hell teach it a lesson.

I average 42-43 under normal riding. 50-52 when riding with the local cruiser group. Low to mid 30's on the "play" roads.

My truck get 13 on a good day.

Then you add in the $5000 for each battery pack replacement (enough to buy almost 1500 gallons of gas, which represents 65,000 miles on a C14)...

When you ride with the foot draggers do you lead and wait at the next corner or follow way behind and play catchup?  ;)

With the Ghul re-flash I'm getting in the low 30's as well but I'm also enjoying the new thrust of the re-flash a lot. On long trips with eco mode I can average about 44. Both numbers are based on the trip computer not on actual measurements.

I average about 32 as well, and I'm ok with that. As Gumby said, beats the hell out of the 7 mpg my truck gets...
