Would love to see them do to the "Big E" what they did with the "Mighty O". I had the privilege to dive on the Oriskany last summer and it was amazing.

No disrespect intended at all for our military, but when I first saw the topic, I thought of this.

I just live a few miles from PSNS in Bremerton.  I guess I'll be able to watch them slowly peel her apart.  There are three other carriers there now.  The highway passes by just a couple hundred yards away, pretty imprassive looking up at them as you drive by.

Big E in Mayport? Home port is Norfolk. My son knows just about every inch of that tub. He spent two years roaming it during its last major refit and then went on its first deployment afterwards. Said it still needed work.  It spent more time in drydock than planned because they found so much wrong with it. It needs to be retired. Its beyond worn out. Maybe once its scrapped my son can see it melted down. He now works in a steel mill that uses only scrap.
I wonder if I call the phone number on my keychain if I'll get the quarterdeck? :-)

Hmm...the boat gets defueled in VA and the rods get moved by train to Idaho. Then the boat gets towed to Wash state?
Why not drive it to Bremerton and defuel it there? Idaho is much closer to WA than VA. Makes no sense.

Just chalk this up to silliness in me. Perhaps someone did the math and the cost of sailing the ship on its own power to Washington plus the cost of creating a facility there to remove the fuel and reactors cost more then removing the fuel and reactors in VA then towing to Washington. naaaaa, would never happen.

An impressive ship CVN-65. . .but she didn't bear the right name like her predecessor  USS Constellation (Connie) CV-64, the last of the diesels.  I served on the Connie, and now I own a Connie. . .wow (sipping my beer).  I'm getting dizzy (burping).  I'm o.k.
To all who served, by hat is off to you.

The Connie wasn't the last built or retired. The last built was the Kennedy (CV67) and the last retired was the Kitty Hawk (CV63) in 2009.
Enteprise was aptly named as she was the first nukie carrier and the only ship in its class.

You are correct Sir.  Meant to say one of the last diesels.
