Temperature Gage
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:58:32 PM »
Greetings, As I am new to this 2010 Neptune Blue with 49,000 on the clock I've noticed that I only see one bar showing after all is warmed up.  If I sit at a stoplight for more than a minute, two bars show but then fall back to just one after riding a half mile or so.  The thermostatic fan will come on if after a ride I let it sit in the sun running at idle.
Is just one bar showing normal for this motorcycle?  Thanks.

On my bike, the 1st bar comes on after a minute warming up at idle, in the morning after standing all night.
2nd bar comes after a couple of miles.
3rd bar after a few minutes in mild weather.
4th bar will come on if I seat in traffic; then eventually the fan will start.
Build bridges, not walls.

Education is important. Riding my bike is importanter.

What Martin states is probably normal for this bike.  Sounds like you may have a defective thermostat.

Mine acts very much like what Martin describes.

My bike behaves exactly like yours does. Even on a 90 degree day I very rarely see two bars while the bike is moving at speed. I was having issues with my bike not warming up when it was cold out. I had the 'stat changed out under warranty and that fixed the cold warm ups but as I said, your acts just like mine does now. If I sit long enough at a stop light when the air temps are near 90 the fans will come on, not very pleasant.

In case anybody is curious, I checked the gauge bars a while back to see what temperatures they indicated:

There are six (6) blocks, and I'll call the bottom block #1. This is the one with the "C" or "F" in it. Mine has a "C" in it.

Block # 1 comes on at 30*C (86*F)
Block # 2 comes on at 50*C (122*F)
Block # 3 comes on at 70*C (158*F)
Block # 4 comes on at 85*C (185*F)
Block # 5 comes on at 100*C (212*F)
Block # 6 comes on at 110*C (230*F). If this block comes on, you are overheating, and the whole screen will be flashing a temperature warning. The 110*C I am posting here is an estimate...I am not curious enough to overheat my engine to find out, but the FSM gives 110*C (230*F) as the upper test limit. I've never hit the sixth block in either of my two Concours-14's, but I have seen 105*C on several other Kawasaki's I have had, and still never got an over-temp warning. My curiosity was only with normal operating temps...not the overheating limit.

Cooling fans turn on at exactly 95*C (203*F) and shut off at 90*C (194*F).

Just FYI...in case you were wondering what your actual temps were;). These coolant temps are at the cylinder head, not at the radiator.

Cheers,
