WARNING: if it can happen to me, it can happen to YOU
« on: August 14, 2011, 09:15:36 PM »
Yesterday, I was out running some back roads having a good time just running a pace on a road I have been over many times.  Here is what happened. I came out of a tight left hand curve and turned up the wick to full throttle, but when I let off the throttle, it stuck about 3/4 open!  That is something I have never had happen in over 40 years of riding. I had the presence of mind to hit the kill switch and slow down all the time rocking the twist grip back and forth trying to get it unstuck.  It finally came loose and I gingerly opened and closed the throttle a few times and it seemed to try to stick at about 1/2 throttle.  I was only about a mile from home so I eased it on home. I took the throttle all apart to try to see what had caused it to stick.  All I can figure is that the cable that opens the carbs must have jumped out of it's track and got jammed in the plastic throttle housing and would not let it close. By me opening and closing the throttle I must have freed it up and it came loose.  The cable that opens the carbs must have gotten too much slack thus allowing it to jam when I attempted to close the throttle as I  came out of the turn.  This could have been a very bad situation had I been in close quarters or in traffic. I would recommend to all C10 owners to check the tension on your throttle cables from time to time.  As for me, I will be adding a extra throttle return spring to the carb linkage to keep more tension on the cable that opens the throttle.
If you have seen heaven, I am sure something scared the hell out of you.

Check the throttle adjuster down at the carbs if it happens again.  Mine came loose once on my C10 and stuck at almost full throttle.  I had taken it off to install the audiovox cruise months before and I guess I didn't tighten it enough.

Shouldn't a two cable throttle control guarantee positive action in both directions? Open and Closed?

Not if throttle opening cables gets jammed,  it will hold the throttle open.  If you can't get it unstuck you are going for a ride.  That is exactly why I posted this.  So folks would not have a false feeling of security.  By me posting this, hopefully if it happens to anyone they will remember to hit the kill switch.  I am just saying.

It sounds like you had too much cable  slack.
Should have minimal slack in cable.

Ride safe, Ted

connie_rider,I think you hit the nail on the head.  It needs to be checked from time to time.
