bolts just spin
« on: September 04, 2012, 03:32:14 PM »
so im checking for anything loose before i leave for the weekend. when i check the bolts on the black plastic 'hub cap' looking thing on the left side (as you sit on the bike) rear wheel. I think there are maybe 6 bolts. 2 of the six tighten up to snug, but the others just spin and spin. Its the rear most ones that will tighten.

Any thoughts,

Bill

Spare us your technical jargon and just say what you want in plain language!    ;D

That 'hub cap' looking thing is a final drive, and those bolts (screws) that just spin are as fake as most real hub caps. They are not real screws, only 'decorations'. Just ignore them and move on to doing a full KiPass workup before going on any long trips. I will outline this:

You must follow the steps exactly as outlines.

1) Put fob in pocket.

Once the KiPass system is completely verified, put fuel in the bike and have a great weekend.

That's what I said except for two things: 1) I worked KiPass into the post and 2) mine was funnier.

Have you checked the one between the gas tank and the trunk, just above the seat?

Oh, wait, that's a nut, not a bolt.   ;D

I did find the rear brake caliper anchor bolt loose on My 08 once. It was the bolt that hold the anchor in relation to the axle. Applied loctite and re tightened. No issues since.

Actually, it's not the first. WAY back when I first bought my bike I asked about those bolts too. Like the Wingnut, had I known that they were only decorative, I wouldn't have asked about them.

No but we (the collective forum 'we') must have advised him to squeezes his fob as hard as he could and click his heels together three times to see the chain, right?

Bill,

I cannot speak for the other poster(s) but I think they were just poking fun at the general idea, not you specifically. We tend to have a few laughs around here and they are not usually at anyone's personal expense. And even if they are, they almost always answer the question so the price is not that high really. Hang around and join in and soon enough you will be chuckling along too.

By the way, I bought my C-14 in July of '07 along with the few other 'old guard' still hanging around here. Guess how we found out that dem' dare' is fakey' screws? Yep, that's right and now you can chuckle at all of us. And another example is that the fuel cap has 5 screws and while they are all real screws and can be removed / reinstalled / tightened, they do not screw to the tank; they too are 'fakey' screws mixed in with the other three functional screws. And yes, I found that out exactly the way you think I did also, especially when I got the new fuel cap and wondered where the 'other' three screws were (two are already attached to the fuel cap, the other three actually secure the fuel cap to the fuel tank or 'gashole' if you prefer).

 ;) ;D

If someone really wanted to make you look foolish, that person would have told you that those screws really do back out but you have to hold the axle bolt with a ½” breaker bar…. 

Brian
