500 EXC-W is a great choice, check out Giant Loop for hauling things around, can't say enough good things about their products.
How does the KLR do on long highway runs? Is 100 miles one way tolerable?Depends on the weather conditions and what tolerable is. And of course, how often? I wouldn't want to do what Steve did on the KLR, he earned much street cred for all the miles he piled on. The KLR is a work horse, a bike that is a stepping stone to the land of dual sporting, lets call it a gateway bike. It will always get you there, but leaves you wanting more.

I've just been thinking about trying something a little different. Maybe the Versus is a better choice. I wouldn't be doing too much off-road. Mostly a 3-state commute.
I still get to shuffle from the 2010 C-14 to the 2011 C-14, but they feel so much alike.
I did 400-500 miles days often. I was in a hurry to get to the meet point in TX during the trip, and went 912 days in one day. No probs.
What are you, a time traveler? lol.
yeah I hated selling it but 6 bikes in the garage was rediculous. Orange is here, I don't have a decent pic of it yet. Exc 530, 23 hours, 908 miles, tons and tons of mods to do before its worthyBe like Jay. Use low tech cell phone pics
