Warranty question
« on: July 10, 2012, 03:29:00 PM »
So my LCD display is fading on top and bottom when in the extreme AZ heat.  I considered this normal as it does go away and when the temp drops and really does not affect me reading the display at all as it is just at the top and bottom.  The dealer noticed it and said they would replace the display under warranty however my milleage would be reset to 0 as it is stored in that part.

So I am wondering if it is worth it to go ahead and let them swap it out or if having the mileage reset will hurt my resale value should I ever decide to resell?

Swap it out.  I'd rather have the mileage off and officially noted than a bad screen.  And the dealer is willing to work with you.  Go for it.

I too say that it's normal. That is a function of LCD screens.
Mileage reset to 0 would concern me, and IMO, will negatively impact resale value.

I'm thinking the same as you...   Plus I have Warranty coverage until 3/15/2017 on my 08 so if it does get worse to where it is a true problem I am still covered... At least that is my thinking.

And as far as my dealer working with me...  The service department is awesome... at least to me...  They even hook me up with loaners :)

Not sure where you are located, but in California when you replace the speedometer / odometer unit, your "supposed to" have the odometer verified by the CHP.

Since you're covered for 5 more years, just wait and see what happens.

Replacement of the speedo/OD will have no adverse affects on resale if you retain documentation of the replacement.

While your Service Dept is willing to replace it today will they be willing to replace it somewhere down the road when it might be said that damage due to leaving the bike exposed to the severe weather elements is NOT covered under warranty....

It's actually a combination of heat and direct sunlight that seems to cause the problem, and it is temporary as you have noted.  This is more of a design issue, rather than a warranty issue.  Odd that your dealer is unaware of this.  Or maybe not, as I have never heard of anyone trying to make a warranty claim on it.  If you swap out the unit, you will no longer have an "A" titled bike, which will very probably affect resale down the road.  Your new unit will continue to have the same issue, so it is unlikely to do you much good. unless Kawi has actually changed the design.

Your bike, etc, but it would be easier to just throw an old shop towel over the gauges, or make a cover or shade for them.  Some people have used shower caps.  :)  I just try to avoid parking in the sun.  Sometimes just parking a quarter- or half-turn different is sufficient.
Eyes, Brain, Hands.  Repeat.

Best dealer in town is GoAZ.. At least for me...  I have had same Service writer (Bret) and same tech (Jim) work on my bike for all warranty and maintenance and they do an awesome job and even hook me up with specials and coupons I never heard about at times.  Just tell then Kirk sent ya and perhaps you will get a little discount as well.

Mine did this last year out in the Arizona New Mexico heat.  The sun was rough on it.  I was worried.  I posted to the list, and sure enough, others had the same problem.  Mine was fine as soon as I got out of the heat.  I too try to not park in the direct sun if at all possible.  However, there ain't much you can do when you are riding!  8-10 hours under the sun is MURDER!!!  Mine was fine as soon as we got back to Missouri!

Is there such a thing as shade?  Not much to be had in Arizona especially Phoenix area...  :(
