Old mirror holes may not be a good location for electronics.  They tend to vibrate badly.  I made a bracket that attaches to the stem cover and it vibrates a little bit.  One of thos mounts that goes around the fuel tank fill cap would work well.  It is a solid and (generaly) vibration free location.  You can find them on Ebay pretty cheap, but be aware that some are listed as fitting the Connie but are too small a diameter.

hmmm... I think I would try the mirror mount, but....  On the slab maybe throw it in the tank bag, and in town and places where there is slower speeds, I can use the mounts, in towns and cities...

WHat do u think, I would think when going slow, the mirror mount would be ok....

Nice work there George

I did something very similar.  I used the http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045066045050051056085/Default.aspx mounted it to the dash, reinforced from the back side with a 2"X 2" piece of brass plating.  I use it for my Magellan , Garmin MapGPS 60 CX or my iPhone 4. (different holders required of course).  I also use old inner tube piece's between the Ram mount and the dash to help absorb some vibrations (don't know if it really makes a difference or not).

Does this mean we get a "Re-Do" on life too?

My GPS mount sticks nicely to the stock windscreen and leans against the top of the dash as a second support.  I put a piece of foam on the dash, no problems thus far.  It's stable, doesn't vibrate and is real easy to look at without taking my eyes off the road.

Those mirror holes buzz pretty bad for electronics on most bikes.  Here's what I did to mount my Garmin GPS.  Do a rubbing (pencil and paper) of the gas cap so I could cut some 1/16'" steel stock purchased from Lowes.  Got a few SS nylock nuts an cap screws too.  Use a hacksaw, center punch, file, and drill to shape it.
I purchased a universal kit from GPScity fro my garmin.  I purchased this kit along with the correct cradle:
http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-cradle-plate-zinc-u-bolt-rail-mount-1.0-inch-ball.html
It is bolted to the mount I made.
From the youtube videos i've seen, a lot of people mount them to the side of the fairing or to the dash.  Sometimes, the side or top of the helmet.  They are probably using temporary suction cups.  Maybe use a one of the screws from the foot scoop to help secure it or tether it for loss prevention if you want it on the fairing.

Edit:  Oops - forgot to add the picture.

I picked up one of the tank mounts off ebay for around $30.  I went with a non-adjustable version that works well with my Nelson-Rigg tank bag.  I had to bend it slightly, it was for a ZX-14.  I use it with two GPS's in RAM mounts (3790T for navigation, the other for Ham Radio APRS):

I would be very leery of mounting electronics to my handlebars based on what I have read for awhile now about things self-destructing due to vibration. Here is what I bout to use my GPS on:

Of course the other option is to buy the Buck shelf which I plan on doing sometime when I have spare money.

A lot of great ideas here! I went ahead and installed a ram mount for my gps. Here are some pics as to what I did:

Nice pics. I used a Ram mount screwed on top of the dash. Good line of sight and the Ram mount is the ONLY way to go. Solid!!

Man, I just hate screwing into the fairing. Anything that I can do to avoid it is what I would try. New holes in the fairing are the last thing to happen, if at all.
