Peeling Can
« on: June 27, 2011, 06:40:50 PM »
The black paint is peeling off the exhaust can of my 2008.  I don't want to modify the exhaust so no need to go there.  Is there a black, heat resistant tape I can wrap the can in so that I don't have prep and paint?  Would this cause excessive heat?

Are you talking about the stock can? Just take it off the bike (10 minutes), use some masking tape, use some high-temp exhaust paint from any auto parts store, reinstall when dry.

Yes the can is stock.  I don't have a clean place to spray and don't want to mess with prepping the peeling paint.  Would there be an issue with taping?

I have just wraped my header with titanium header wrap looks like carbin fiber, cheaper on ebay, but I know some local parts stores have it.  If you do go with paint I would use a good header paint.

The peeling is getting worse so there aren't many options.  I'm scared.

What is the best way to remove the old paint?  Does the metal need roughed up in order for the paint to adhere?

Remove the pipe from the bike and take off the end cap. Using some 400 grit sandpaper, smooth down the area where the paint is peeling. After the surface is smooth, use some 600 grit sandpaper to rough up the entire surface (Scotch-Brite works OK too). Buy 1 can of high temp, BBQ or ceramic paint of your liking. Tape off the sections you don't want painted and apply several light coats of paint until it is covered and even. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before ridding.

Well boys and girls...EAT YOUR HEART OUT!!!

I ended up finding someone from church who could paint bazooka professionally.  I decided to leave end cap and collar metallic.  However, I was glad I removed them...the paint was flaking terribly underneath both.  The flat black is a perfect match with the engine case and is smooth as silk.  Much higher quality than from factory.

I disagree that it's not an engine mod.  I put straight pipes on my 1500 classic and re-jetted the carburetor and it never ran the same again.  The first three miles in the morning were pure misery.  Not to mention she would either hesitate or hiccup at take off.  I took it to three shops and nobody could tune it properly.

I'm very happy with how Constance performs.

Thanks for the feedback but to each their own.

If you're happy with the fugly bazooka, that's all that matters. :)

BTW, it's not necessary to jet your bike if you are simply replacing pipes. Most exhaust companies will "urge" you to jet because it adds more fuel and makes the bike run cooler than stock. If your bike runs cooler, chrome pipes are less susceptible to bluing. Generally it's not "necessary" to jet unless you are changing the intake or tuning for performance/elevation. If you jet incorrectly, your bike will run like crap regardless...
