Question about the stock seat...
« on: May 21, 2012, 12:03:49 AM »
I love the stock seat.  Have a few days I went over 1000 miles on it, and a few weekends ago i went 750 in a day 2 up.

Prob is either I'm getting older, its my imagination, or the foaming is "wearing out". I'm fairly scrawny 6'2" 180 but the seat has > 50,000 miles on it. Of course KiPass has prevented the seat from breaking.

Anyone else experience this?

If its the foam wore out, is there an after market contact that may "refoam it" ?

After that many miles it probably is breaking down some. You can take it to any upholstery shop and have it reworked with new padding. Or probably for the same price you can buy a take off seat from someone here.

It is interesting that you like the stock seat! I first thought I did not like it, but I do as well. I want to try out some aftermarket seats, but do not really want to shell out cash because I am so far comfortable in the stock seat - go figure!

With only 50k on it, that should be covered by warranty.

You'll hear it from more than me.  Time to consider the Spencer option.  Not too expensive, same basic seat, better foam.

He doesn't have prices for the mod, do you happen to know how much it is for our C14s?  Sending the seat off may be tough but since he's in FL perhaps he could do it while I wait in the shop or such  :D

Spencer is very reasonable with prices. He can rebuild the whole seat or just the riders area if thats the main problem. I would email him and because you're fairly local you might be able to work something out with him (saving on shipping). I think my seat mod cost $70. The shipping to and from Arizona cost more. I paid about $120 for both sections of the seat, iirc.  He basically turns the seat around the day he gets it, so the only wait is for shipping.  You'll want to do the whole seat I'm sure so your "fun girls" can be comfortable.

Actually, a LOT of people like the stock seat or are just fine with it.  (I personally wouldn't know because I had to have a lower seat, immediately.  Have been quite happy with the Sargent low, though.)

Steve,

Ask KiPass what to do, (only kidding)  ;D
Yep, as others have stated you can get some better foam fitted along with a better non slip cover, then the stocker seat will be great for another 100,000 miles, or until the silver bike catches up with you  ;D ;D

Thanks, I've consulted the mad pow-ah of KiPass and it's leaning me towards Spencer here in FL

Yes, KiPass has also prevented my seat from breaking. It protects everyone's seat as well as anything inside the general aura of KiPass (about 5 feet in all directions from the front part and just below the saddle). If you don't believe this, next time you move the bike look back and study the area where it was parked; betcha' the floor under the bike is cleaner and brighter than the surrounding area.

As far as restoring the comfort of the stock seat I really cannot help with that. My stock seat was OK for a couple of hours and then slowly turned into a medieval torture device like the rack but smaller and more efficient.
