The seafood is better in Charleston, SC than Tampa.
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:56:38 AM »
I left Tampa on the Connie and went 900 miles round trip to Charleston SC (Shem Creek) for seafood.

There is a key reason the seafood is much better for me there. Even though its about the same 'ole fish and recipes

Oh, I don't know.  Had some pretty good seafood in Orange, VA last Saturday.  Would definitely go back.

Your "punchline" link or picture isn't working. Looks like a little indented box with some teeny, tiny orange characters in it. So, all us mortals are still waiting.  ???

Try the Charleston Seafood.

Take my word for it. We have thousands of miles of coast in FL with fresh fish coming in 24/7, can't beat the Charleston, SC seafood.  Specifically at the Shem Creek area  :D

I've ate in some of the Charleston establishments and you are quite correct in your assessment of their victuals.  It's just a tad far for us.  So if I can find a place a bit closer, say like 75 miles or so then that's all the better.

15 north out of town and it's on the right in the old mill.  Lots of character....

There are many and you can't go wrong at any of them because they are competitive. If i had to choose one I suppose this would be may favorite: www.rbsonshemcreek.com

Isle of Palms mentioned above is only a few miles away and full of good eating too

If you're there on a Saturday night maybe Teressa and I can do another long round trip drive and meet you

Thats a fuuny to me... RB's stands for Ronnie Bowles, he owned the restaurant business on Shem Creek for years.. every restaurant.. so it didnt matter where you ate, it went in his pocket..
When times got tight, he closed a couple and burned the rest...  so now its a free market again, but RB's is considered the tourist trap! Really they are all tourist traps...  there are a couple scary places on James Island, on the road to Folly Beach which have been recognized by national networks are the oyster or clam houses... they are very rural in style. Basically you sit at a picnic table whith buckets placed in the middle for shells! They are

I was stationed in Charleston from 1980-1986 and have lived just up the interstate since 1962, I love the great food they offer, but it's always the best STRAIGHT off the boat!  There are numerous spots along the "creek" that sell fresh off the boat and if you can boil.. OMG!

I followed the whole drama with RB and his wife back in the day, and the fresh burnings.  Still as an SC fella' I've confirmed after eating all along that coast for atmosphere/price/value/flavor he's still serving it up....sure you can buy fresh off the boat and cook it yerself but DAMN thats not what I was into  :D

And don't discount the crab shack at Savannah/Tybee for good "picnic table style side of the road joints" with a hole in the middle of the tables and a bucket to catch the crap heh

I didn't have time over the weekend to hit folly but yeah the dive food places are epic and I try to go.  Also don't discount Edisto =)

Steve J gave me a hook up on the "dive style picnic table" Lobster joints in Maine, I'm riding up there to eat soon from Tampa  :D
